Hi guys, I know this has been asked time and time again but times change, tech changes and prices change so I think this is always something that needs to be asked every so many months and the fact that I am looking at get cctv myself due to some houses being robbed around me.

Ok it needs to be outdoor cameras as the indoor camer I have doesn't work in the night time as the infrared sensors always give off a reflection on the window.
It also needs to be able to have motion detection so it will send me an email and it would be nice to connect to the cameras via the internet when I am not at home.
I need at least 2 cameras but am leaning towards 4 now but its all dependant on price and I want colour and they have to be wired as the wireless signal around me is aweful.
Also not bothered about them having audio either although I think most come with this anyhow.
The price I want to spend is around £150 but willing to go up to £200 if needed. Not a great amount I know but that is the budget I have unfortunately.

I have seen a few on the bay but just not sure when it comes to the compression rates of video and image sensors to name a few.

Are the dome cameras you see for around 50 quid ok? Guessing having one system for all would be best but would they be a viable option?

lol i have a cnm system that come with a pvr hdd and 4 cameras, its like anything mate the more you spend the better you get. The small cameras are ok but getting one with more lines ie 700 tvl 50m night vision sony effio but we work on a budget lol

About 12 months ago we bought a Swann system from Makro for £260inc. It came with PVR and 4 camera's (the PVR can take 8).

The only gripe I have about the system is that you have to use Internet Explorer if you want to view the CCTV cams over a network or through the internet. Although it has got iphone and android apps.

The 4 Swann cameras we got with it were 540 lines CCD and we sold them on ebay for £70 each and bought 8 cameras that looked the same also with 540 line CCD but were £18 each. To be honest I can't tell the difference but the cheaper ones have a better night vision range.

Its much the same with the cnm to, explorer to acess box and view anywhere but app on my windows 7 hd2 works ok and andriod tablet works brillaintly fast lol

The cameras that come with it are ok but my 700tvl 9mm-22mm looks so much better. My only problem is i bought a 4 port system and wish i had 8 lol but split the input but no motion on them cameras so doesnt matter

Your could save some money if you have a hdd spare and if and when replace the cameras to someting better. If you start looking there is some really decent cameras out now even 1080p lol but hhd wll be full soon andbig money too

Be amazed what you see poeple doing. i caught someone breaking into next doors cupboard and 1 family doing nothing but wrong :p

Thanks for the reply guys. Don't think I am that bothered about 1080p cameras as I know they will bang the price up just as long as they can detect someone really and it doesn't just show up as a shape and blurry.
I have a Y-Cam at the moment (2nd generation) and I am happy enough with the quality from that so anything the same or better will be fine. Just had a look for the specs of that and I think there pretty poor compared to what is out there...even the spec I mentioned in the first post so I think I may be happy with pretty much anything lol. Easy to please!!!

Spec of Y-Cam -
Sensor type 1/4in CMOS
Video frame rate 30fps
Wired adapter speed 100Mbits/sec
WiFi standard 802.11g
Power over Ethernet no
Compression scheme MJPEG, MPEG4
The camera supports the following resolutions and will run at 30 frames per second across them all:
640×480 pixels (VGA)
320×240 pixels
160×120 pixels
The camera comes with a fixed lens. Focal length: f=2.5, Aperture: F2.0mm.
Viewing angles: Horizontal= 53.4 degrees Vertical= 40.0 degrees

So considering the above will the 420 TVL do me? Obviously I will get higher if it is a possibilty.

What is the models of your systems that you both have?

Mine might not brillaint but does what i want, bit sensitive to motion sometimes but depends really, If you google cnm cctv your see mine or cnm secure website.
Im sure there are much better out there now days too but im in no postion to change that :(

I think 420tvl will do fine but at night my 700tvl is so much better.

What about a trip to maplins ?? least you get a idea mate

Not a bad idea having a trip there. See what spec i like and then get on the internet to find similar.
Cheers for the input anyway.

Just come across this as well which seems to tick the boxes for what I want and it seems pretty cheap also.

SUNLUXY Home 4CH CCTV DVR Day Night Weatherproof Security Camera Surveillance System

Actually just read a bad review about this so probably best looking at what has been recommended here I think.

Seen one on the bay with some good reviews "ZMODO 4 CH Channel DVR Outdoor 480TVL CCTV Home Security Camera System 500GB HD" so will bare this one in mind also.

Dont like the look of that pvr tbh mate. i would try to find a descent pvr and then maybe add better cameras to it later.

I checked the ZMODO 4 and looks and sounds ok, maybe try some cctv forums and see if it gets a good review.

I did email a few people who had bought the ZMODO system and they all said it was decent enough. One guy pointed me to another similar model which had 23 IR instead of the 11 that I was looking at and that was an extra tenner which came to £165.
Do like the system miggy posted, thanks for that mate, but when mentioning to the missus about spending £165 on cctv she wasn't impressed so trying to convince her on £200 may be a challenge LOL.

Soon change her mind if we get broken in to though....shouldn't tempt fate!!!
