could anyone help I am using a Belkin wireless router to conect my 2 pc I am able to log onto the net but unable to share files and folders i have spent 2 days trying to solve this

are you both on the same usergroup
network places
entire network
microsoft windows network
here all computers except my son's are on Workgroup but he has his on MShome.
if not that have you put on file and printer sharing for microsoft networks ?.

can you even see the other computer ?.

no I can not see the other computer ,how can I get them to talk to each other

have you put on file and printer sharing on each computer
start
settings
network connections
right click the network connection
properties
does it say file and printer sharing for microsoft networks ?
it should be the 2nd one down.
i have
client for microsoft windows
file and printer sharing for microsoft networks
QoS packet scheduler (don't remember what that does ?)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

That is all I had to do to get my computers talking,
All I can think of is that it is a security setting somewhere, have you checked your firewall settings etc.
Silly question but do you have my network places on you desktop, if you have that then you should be able to share.
until you share your files it will show the other computer but nothing else.

are u using dhcp from your router ? and are both pc setup to use dhcp ?

Just a thought xpantispy has a setting to stop computers from being seen on a network

If you got the program it will tell you if your computers are hidden, if so you can use it to unhide them. The program is a freeby

I just tested it here, while 2 of my computers couldn't see each other they could ping each other, have you tried a ping ?.

hatab.whats dhcp? I am total new to networking so I am finding it hard,

ellie1998 how do I ping the other computer, how can I find the Ip address of the computers?

thanks

OK what I am getting now is laptop not accessable you may not have permission to use network resource contact administraror of this server to have access
Network path not found

to find the ip address of a computer
start
settings
network connections
double click local area connection (or whatever it is called)
support
when you get that screen hold down Alt (left one), hit Print Screen
go to paint click edit, click paste, save as a jpg (smaller) and upload the result here.

O K all
I kave now sorted it, Was the symantec sof****e that was stopping from connecting

I had to remove the software then it worked

many thanks for your help

hi kinner

(dhcp) Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is an automatic way of giving IP addresses to your machines if they are using tcp/ip (a protocol) to transfer data from 1 pc to another and to connect to the internet. (sets the last 4 entries automatically in example)
the other way is to use static ip addresses where u have to type them in, although not difficult to setup yourself if the addresses or subnet mask are wrong then the machines will not see each other.

if u go to dos/cmd and type ipconfig /all u will get summat like this

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX)
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.60
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

this machine is not using dhcp.

glad u sorted problem, hope this explains dhcp :)

hatab
thanks for that info, nice to know some one will take the time to explain things
as you see it was all to do with symantec blocking the two computers,as soonas i removed the software from the laptop it all worked

no probs, its what we are about :) anytime if i know ill chip in
