hello M8

you have both PC's running ME correct ??

ok first of all it depends on what type of network you want to have there are networks that have a server or there are Peer 2 Peer 9i think you want peer 2 peer

so you have correctly installed the network cards and hub, first of all you cannot connect the PC's directly to each other they need to go through the hub

also in the network neighbourhood settings you need to have the network cards set up to have the protocol TCP/IP enabled for the network cards (J5) if you have tcp/ip enabled check that its enabled for the dial up adaptor if it is then you will have to add a new tcp/ip protocol for the actual adaptor

so there should be 2 tcp/ip protocols one for dial up adaptor (modem) and 1 for network card

its easy to install a protocol just use the add button

also if you want to play games across the network add a ipx/spx protocol for the adaptor 2

but there could be loads of reasons that the network is not working

faulty leads, wired in box wrong (the bt lookalike box's), windows invalid driver support, check your system to makesure the network cards are working OK,

also there are advanced options i can tell you but try these for now, what are you trying to do
also tell me as much as you can about your setup and what you have already done and tried

So far i've phoned the company up and they have told me f*** all,
i have both pc's running me and same cards in both of em.
What im trying to do is basicly add another HDD to each system so that i can acsess file from anywhere in the pc without cd's.
Thanks for the info so far but i have a nasty feeling that this is'nt going to be the last post about this.

thanks i'll give it a whril and i'll see

You will find some help at this site m8:
http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/HomeNet-Win98P1.asp

Networking is hard to understand for most of us!

the others r right it can be a bit daunting to start with, i would suggest a couple of thing initially
1 add netbuei as protocol (no settings needed)
2 check leds in netcards ie u get line led on when u connect to hub

but keep posting with how u getting on and we can nudge u in right direction, there r 2 many things that could be wrong on the first go as mickie says

I'd suggest u drop the IP idea for the mo and use netbui......also, make sure the pc's are in the same work group. With IP if there addressing themeselves they may put themselves in different ranges and then won't talk.....so get netbui working first so u know the kit is ok...then venture into TCPIP.

Sucsess!!!! I have done what i wanted to do I've linked all the drives to each ccomputer so its just like haveing an extra HDD on each comp and a few cd-rom's thanks to all your help your all stars
Just 1 more thing though how do you get them to run off the internet at the same time?

Thankyou all again Monkeyspunks

right click on your dial up connection within dialup networking (on the pc with a modem) and select shareing.......

sorry about the delay in reply i forgot about this thread right as the others said i should have said about netbui first then worry about the ip thing after

but your windows might not have the sharing feature as i have a windows 2k that does not have it (and yes i did try to add it in the add/remove but its not on the disk???)

also if you do not have the sharing protocol in your internet options then you will need software to do this and i would recommend analogX proxy as its very small and very good (shame it dont support irc and a few others but for e-mail and web surfing its very good)

Mickie, win2k does have internet connection sharing, cos i'm using as we speak. it's not on the CD, its already built into the OS.....I reckon ur just looking in the wrong place m8!!!
