I need help big time, I upgraded one of the hdd's in my computer from 80gb to 250gb so I could keep all my movies and stuff on one drive.

Everything was working fine until I connected all my drives up. I had to disconnect one drive to connect the new drive so I could transfer my stuff. Checked it was all there and working then took out the old drive whacked in the new one and re-connected the one I took out. (Making sense?) Rebooted and now its all gone!

Anyways so now I should have over 140gb of movies, tv shows etc I stored up over the years. I tried to open the drive and I get the message this drive is not formatted do you wish to format!!! WTF no I dont wish to format wheres all my shit?

The worst thing was I cut and pasted from my old drive instead of copy and pasting now I dont even have a back up of the movies. I aint too bothered about the tv shows they can easily be downloaded again but some of my movies were very hard to come across..

Is there anyway I can get my stuff of the drive???

Im sooo pissed of im not even sure what im typing is making sense!!

Congrats man......thats the thing when this happens is to stay cool, walk away and think of what you need to do.

Great news you got it back man.

Well done.

Part 2

I am soo pissed off! After getting everything to work the other day I shut down my computer as normal after watching a movie, turned it on in the morning and now this hdd isnt be dectected no more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tried it my brothers computer, in usb caddy nothing... Does power up because I can hear it spin but nothing...

I guess its a dodgey HDD and iv well and truely lost all my data now for good :(

and hard drive repair peeps is a lot of money m8

Funnily enough I have jus been doing some googling and found that same suggestion... Dont know if it will work but im going to try it!!

Otherwise im going to try opeing the 250gb and putting it in my 80gb WD casing and see it works... Might end up buggering that up too but I cant stand to lose 100's of movies and tv shows...

Whacked it in the Freezer and going to see what happens... Hopefully I can get it too load and back up my data before it goes dead again...

Tried HDD after 30mins and cant believe it! It actually got detected.... But was getting same shitty msg like at the start of this thread so going to use recovery software and try get data back 2mw... Whacked it in the freezer for overnight now as it got warm quite quick...

Right, I may look like the guy who's come in in the middle with a quick fix but this happens to me quite alot with my external drive.

The solution I use is a dos command that is only in XP (I think)

chkdsk

This should rewrite all the paths on the disk. You have to do this from within the OS, which must be XP. Also, use the tag of /f

So lets say the drive is the L drive you write in cmd

chkdsk L: /f

This will come up with loads of errors, and should fix the drive.

Sometimes this deletes one or two files that are corrupted, so dont yell at me if this goes wrong. I dont want to be held responsible. But I use this very often.

I will keep this in mind 2mw when I take the drive out the freezer lol... I already got a tried and tested software that works... This time once I got all my data im just going to bin this HDD its obviously foooked in soo many ways... Im just going to try get hold of another one... So if anyone has a spare 250gb hdd they want to sell me cheap send me pm :)

Im not going to bin it until I got data off it... The thing is I already got my data back once then did full format and put everything back thinking it was going to be ok... Then all of a sudden its not being detected... So tried freezer trick... But getting this disk needs formatting... This is defo a dodgey hdd

I know it seems like im just making this thread longer for no reason but just quick update... Almost recovered all my data then going to run chkdsk and fix what ever needs fixing and hopefully this will be the end of this saga... But I will not be using this HDD again as it has caused me more head ache then its worth..

chkdsk will fix it probs. I don't see why you would wanna get rid of a good drive if chkdsk fixes it. But if you do, get a 500GB hd. I just did for under £200, It's so good. :D

chkdsk has seem to fix all the problems for now thanks mate! Everythings back in my computer and running as normal... Atleast I have a backup of everything now if anything goes wrong...

I just hope the drive lasts now without failing or any other problems.
