has anyone ever come across a problem with this box where the box turns itself off then reboots and turns itself off again and keeps going through this loop

tbh, it could be pretty much anything from power supply failure to firmware corruption.
It sort of sounds like something is pulling a lot of power when its initialised and is causing the psu to trip.
