Electronics

Well, maybe there's scope for a bit more of a wider discussion? A mix of IC and discrete still looks good?

I just found my Vero wiring pen which makes building stuff on Veroboard (especially digital) really easy!

Just found 4 Z80A's and 2 AY8910 Synth Chips from the old days repairing arcade machines

Going to have a good look in the back of my shed at the weekend to see what else I can find.

I'm just reading up on doing a ambilight for my daughter, I made the mistake of showing her one on utube and is now pleading me to make one lol.
Been years since I soldered anything but have been getting all my bits together again.
Even found out this dated 1943 and still works perfect for a quick batter test

Erm, what's a 'batter test' ?

him her it is Shrove Tuesday soon this must be the patented batter tester to give perfect pancakes lol

Remember the old veroboard at college. Liked working with them tbh. More tactile. Then we moved onto PCB. As the transfers we used also had alphanumerical transfers on them, I ended up using the PCB transfers to create false I.D's to get into clubs!!! Far more productive for me and my mates!

Ahem... was also great for making our little DC power supplies, etc....... lol

a lot of it is all arduino based now. only need components for external boards

I had to use wicki for that, not much wiser tbh. I was ok with the "batter" tester.

To cross connect with another thread "A man's got to know his limitations".:Biggrin2:

I still build Guitar effects, mod amps and Guitar electronics the home brew scene is still pretty big in this area I even still etch my own printed circuit boards now and again

I spent more than 25 years working for a Big Telco and in 1994 all engineers had their soldering irons confiscated. Elf & safety plus progress by order of the management.

Nothing too complicated here. Mostly Practical Electronics/Practical Wireless projects.

Ah memories! The smell of hot solder burning flesh.

Ha ha, that brings back memories indeed ... of holding a component on the other side of the circuit board, and realising just too late that it's getting HOT!

Sometimes my simplest projects are the ones that gave me the most pleasure, e.g. as a student, calibrating the fuel guage on my first car (Ford Escort MkII) so that EMPTY meant EMPTY. I drove around for a while with my potentiometer attached (and spare fuel in a can), until she finally coughed to a halt, so that I could get the right resistance before refuelling and going home to solder.

Personally I'd have left the pot in- think of the fun you could have had when lending the car to unsuspecting 'friends' LOL!

I once had a Laguna that I picked up cheap because it wouldn't run when warm. Obviously a dud temp sensor, but, being a Renault, new part was extortionate- and with no cheap copies at the time, a pot ended up being a manual choke (remember those?)- even passed an MOT with flying colours :)

Then the automatic choke would go on the blink, and you didn't even have a knob to fiddle with!

And what's wrong with a handle to wind up a window? Rarely went wrong, precise control, and you don't have to fumble for a switch!

Progress! Was it ?:Biggrin2:

For a minute I thought you were referring to the handle to start the engine! No solenoid or sticky bendix to worry about... but, I'm sorry, the good old starter motor IS progress!

We can agree on that one, though I've had an A35 and A40 which had both (back when Britain thought they made cars).

I feel a rant room episode coming on, may start later.:Biggrin2:

ive built a couple of e-cigs from scratch which i loved doing i would love to tinker with making a little led box as i have loads of leds and battery packs anyone have any ideas?

if you know what i mean like the led box's with 3x3 rows of leds?

If anyone can share their knowledge base with how easy this would be then please let me know as i would love to get the knack of it.

If you search Utube for "led cubes" or "led arrays" there's loads.

Or even this...........Amazing Lasers! - Blu-ray Laser Phaser! - YouTube:)
