hi guys ive inherited a dual intel server with 2 gigs of ram! RAID 5 scsi controller.

any ideas what i can do with it? ive never had a server n not entirely sure what its potential is?

ive got a PC and laptop do i use the server as a storage centre?

any ideas and suggestions welcome!

thanks!

stick ubuntu linux server on it

install vmware server

create a few virtual machines

bung it in the garage and hook it up to the network

let your virtual machines handle downloads etc as well as anything else you fancy. a dual cpu machine is too good to waste on a file server - ever thought about having an itunes server, or slim server?

like he said,
but i'd also sugest putting a pci tuner in it - sat/cable/DTT, whatever rocks your boat.

then use it as a remote pvr & video-streamer.

itunes server or slim server? what would that do? im completely thick hwen it comes to servers! lol i dont even know what there purpose is!

thanks lads for the info.

ok, basically an itunes server lets you hold all your music in one place - you can then use itunes as a client to pick it up from where ever in your network. Upside, you never need to worry about formatting your desktop/laptop again as it never holds the msuic. Dowside, you have to use itunes to pick it up.

slim server, same thing with the added benefit that you can use other applications to pick up your music. Info on slim server here: http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html and an ubuntu server here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=42192

You could also use vmware to create a linuxmce server (read this: http://linuxmce.com/) to handle all your video and TV as well.

Adding vmware server will pretty much allow you to do whatever you can think of (or ask about). For instance, you could install a copy of win xp/vista and use that via remote desktop to any machine you have at home/work. The machine you have has plenty of power to do all of this if it is just a few machines connecting to it.

A much more worthwhile addition to this machine would be a couple of gigabit network adapters. Having more than one will mean it can stream more stuff out in one go :)

wow karym6! im stumped mate! posibilites are endless!

thank for all the info got alot of reading to do now, its got 3 x 36gig scsi drives already in a raid5 shall i keep that or get rid? can i turn it in to a server were people can access my files and i can share them with friends?

if ur thinkin of like a file server i would recommend goign for linux or a very secure windows

get rid of the scuzzy drives and whack some satas in :)

id recommend glftpd for linux and drftpd or oiftpd for windows

encrypt ur drives and make sure u use ssl :D

dont get rid of the scsi drives - they are too good to be chucked...

Best thing to do would be to get a good os on it first, linux is probably the best as it will be v easy to install. Take a look here: http://www.google.co.uk/url?q=http:...t&cd=3&usg=AFQjCNGwXgYIxtrLcekyzGFXhoViauTU-A this will be all you need to get started :)

its got 3 x 36gig scsi drives

whats he going to do with allthat space?

lol thats why i said get rid of the scsi drives :p

as long as its not torrents i will happily help u out :)

im keeping the scsi in raid 5 and thinking about adding another sata raid 5 with 4x750gigs hotswap! eventually get some 1TB drives when prices fall.
u guessed lol for file sharing! thanks again karym6!

that may proove to be a bit pricey - you may need to get a new raid card for your pc to do that? And a card that supports raid 5 could cost a fair whack..

Let us know how you get on with this

yup, found a 2nd hand LSI megaraid card with 8 sata ports! for £150

will keep you posted! im going with the ubuntu server edition just like you recomended!

thanks!

if you install linux then consider multiple tuner cards for sat, cable & terestrial and install mythtv.
http://www.mythtv.org/

and install the o.s. on fast scsi drives,
put work on fast scsi drives,

store stuff on cheap big ide drives.
sata drives seem to have a poor lifespan and i wouldnt personally touch them.

Or even better....use Vmware...to assist in the development into SPAM and Virus's....lol

opps I have let out my little secret....

I would use it as a file/media server!

Thats what my server does....

go fo it if you fancy a bunch of virii and the possibility of the police knocking on your door...
elite, if you get the chance have a go with linuxmce - it really is fantastic

care to explain that?

it's torrent users that keep getting done over, and limewire is the virus distribution hub!
