UK News Contactless Increase Tomorrow

Many allow you to set your own limit, but barclays will mirror what you set across all your accounts.

Barclays will not allow you to set your own limit, however, you can opt-out of contactless payments on the app, online or by phone.

Barclays said: "The £100 limit should be adopted.

"The new limit will help you provide an improved and consistent consumer experience regardless of where they make purchases."

What if I prefer the lower limit?

Your bank may allow you to set your own. For example, customers of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland will be able to choose a contactless limit between £30 and £95, in increments of £5. They will be able to do that via the mobile app. This will initially apply to debit cards, with credit cards – including the MBNA brand – due to follow a little later.

During the first six months of this year, contactless fraud – covering cards and mobile phones – totalled £7.6m, according to the banking body UK Finance.
The total amount spent contactlessly during the first six months of this year was £66.5bn – so 1p in every £100 spent was fraudulent, which is “a tiny proportion” of overall transactions, it adds.
At £355m, the sum lost to bank transfer scams (AKA authorised push payment fraud) during the first six months of this year was 47 times higher than that lost to contactless fraud.
You are fully protected against fraud, so you get all of your money back and will never be left out of pocket
The fact that a contactless card can be quickly blocked in the event of loss or theft limits the potential financial damage, as does the fact that if you are already close to your transaction limit when your card is stolen, the thief might only be able to use it once or twice before they are required to enter the pin.

Can ya guess which one is @Ferret lads😉

For Santander users like me you can't limit it but can turn it off>>

The contactless card payment limit will rise from £45 to £100

UK retailers and merchants will start making the change from 15th October 2021 but it may take some time for all retailers to allow the higher contactless transaction limit of £100.

Your contactless payments will still be very secure thanks to the following.

  • Contactless uses the same security features as Chip and PIN (you can learn more about this in the ‘Security’ section at the bottom of this page).
  • We'll sometimes ask for a Chip and PIN transaction to confirm that it's still you using the card. With the higher contactless transaction limit, this will happen more often. So, if a contactless transaction is declined, try Chip and PIN instead.
  • You'll always need to complete a Chip and PIN transaction on any new card before contactless will work.
  • If you don't want to make contactless payments, you can just use Chip and PIN instead. Take a look at our instructions below to learn how.
