Father-in-law has just bought a widescreen 19" monitor but when he plugs it it still displays at 4:3 with black stripes down the sides. I tried right click on desktop, properties, settings, screen resolution to no avail. Anyone know what to do?

cheers

Read the box, to determine the supported resolutions, use one of the widescreen ones. next, user the "On Screen Display" OSD, and tell the monitor to display in widescreen

should work!

Theres usually a button on the monitor to bring up the monitor menu, look for the screen size options to stretch the picture to fit the screen, some have a fit all option. also see if you can set the video properties to their highest with a refresh rate of 60/65hz

Not 100% sure as don't know which model you've got but there should be some buttons e.g. on/off, +/- & menu. IF you ain't got a manual with the monitor normally if you press the menu button a few times it gives you different options (like brightness, contrast etc) hopefully one of them will be the one you want.
Good luck.
post make / model number if you're still struggling.

Tell us what brand your monitor is also it should of came with a driver cd have you installed it? What resolution are you running? Try moving it to the max... It most likely going to be 1440x900.

Goto display properties and then goto settings tab.
