i am trying to pay for things through paypal but as soon as i go to the paypal page i get
"Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.paypal.com.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

Reformat time then maybe.

you could install ie tab addon as a temp fix and config so it always opens with that page.

Upgrade to the firefox 4 betas or latest 3.x.

Install Chrome :)

Not sure if it is still being targeted but we did have instances of hackers etc. attacking PayPal specifically all down to the wikileaks issue if I remember. Your issue seems strange enough that it could well be something to do with this and does not sound like a firewall; modem or pc related issue but could be wrong. Will take a look around and see what comes up.

Have you tried connecting to PayPal directly, not through eBay?

Done some more research on this and my bet is that you will be ok if using IE. Firefox however presents you with the problem. According to what I have read it is an HTML coding issue between the eBay window and Paypal link. In IE there is no issue but firefox might present the problem as IE implementation is done first and then FF. I don't have this issue on any platform that I try, XP or W7 but all java and firefox updates are applied.

Is the version of firefox the same on all machines? I ask because I'm assuming your are trying firefox on your wifes pc, which you say is fine.

firstly thanks for all the input guys.
I have problem with all browsers.
i tried disabling all plugins to all avail.
I can goto paypal through ebay but not when making payment.
Really strange this.
going to check wifes comp but thinking more firewall on router.
i am also going to try htpc wireless .
will keep informed

you could always check your hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) to see if any bonkers entries.

you could try flushing DNS, drop to a cmd prompt, 'ipconfog /flushdns', and temp change the dns servers on that machine to another, say googles (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4).

I know dave knows his stuff and it's just a foggy typo. I'm sure he won't mind, but the correct cmd prompt is

ipconfig /flushdns

No matter what your problem is an interesting one so will keep looking around.

lol i guessed the typo (ipconfig my fav cmd)
i have another windows on same system(bought ssd ) and not formatted it yet.
it works no problem so i am going to reformat the drive as i give up with this.
If there is malware or something odd the format will do it .
besides it will be a good opportunity to buy another ssd and raid them as my m8 just got a bit quicker system than me and we aare geeting a little competitive once more.
tanks very much for help guys really appreciated
