If you buy your petrol in Bradford then while you are filling up your
car numberplate could be being read by a police numberplate recognition
system and sent off to the police computer.

This is a pilot scheme being run in Bradford, eventually the police could
have machines in every filling station allowing them to track and record
the movements of every car in Britain.

I read about it this morning. In a way it's a good thing but wouldn't it be
an invasion of privacy? Plus where they have started doing the trial, it's
not the best petrol station in Bradford is it? Was it last year someone got
shot there?

The police have invited every filling station in Bradford to join the
trial, all 53 plus two who already have it.

I don't think it will do much to stop people being shot or much to
prevent serious crime. If you're going to hold up a filling station
you use false plates.

It's a big step beyond CCTV, video tapes can't be put on a database
or even stored for very long, they can't be processed by a computer
to track someones movements over many years.

Can't think why it's needed, the Prime Minister is still insisting that
the world is far safer now than it's ever been, on the day after the
security services recomended putting steel barricades round the Houses
of Parliament.

Yes but we all know Tony Blair wouldn't know which way a lift was going if
he had 2 guesses.

What's 8 inches long and hangs in front of an arsehole? Tony Blair's tie!

Can't see what good reading number plates at petrol stations will do.
Suppose it's another way of stealing peoples identities I suppose
