I'd probably go for the Gigabyte over the Foxconn myself, but both seem fine... As does the chip.

The Gigabyte only holds 2gb of ram so if he needs more ram in future he would be a little stuck.

The Foxconn is a decent budget board, should do him fine on a budget.

Oops, me bad, didn't spot that... Sorry!

Your Intel 775 MB & CPU + 1GB mem would cost £95.80 excluding delivery

Whereas an AMD AM2 bundle MB+ AMD AM2 Dual Core 4200 CPU + 1GB mem would cost £93.94 excluding delivery and vat wherever applicable.

The above in mind, and for not much more in cost terms, the AM2 would walk all over the Intel 775 solution and your friend would have something more capable for future needs and upgrades. You could also shop around and maybe get it cheaper by using other AM2 motherboards.

What exactly is your buddy looking at using this computer for. We could recommend get a all-singing, all-dancing CPU/MB but if he/she is only using it for web browsing, a bit of e-mail and some word documents that there are going to be some solutions which would be overkill.

Sorry mate but the e2160 will cripple the X2 4200 at stock, overclock it and it will match or come very close to the X2 6000+.

Stick with the e2160, very good chips for the price, nothing else can match it, or for an easier overclock go with the e2180, it will overclock easier due to it's higher multiplier.

Those AMD chips are very limited if you want to push it any further.

Also the AMD solution from you point to will end up costing almost £120 mate. £85 + £15 delivery + vat.

You could get the same setup from Ebuyer for less than £100 delivered mate. And that is using OCZ Platinum XTC memory.

As for future upgrading, both the AMD and Intel solutions are as good as each other, both use the latest technology. Well apart from DDR3 but that is pointless at the moment.
