Hello strangers!

Hi All.

I’m looking to hang a hardwood gate that has been sitting in my garage for 3 years! And finally had some posts made.

It’s Sapele and has an old coat of Sikkens Filter7+ Mahagony on it.

I’ve just give it a wash down and love the gloss look of it!

Do Sikkens do a goss or perhaps semi gloss finish or will the satin look ok once done?

Also how do paint all around it when it’s hung? Or is there a way to paint it whilst it’s off to do the bottom etc ?

I will be hanging it on 400mm Hook & Band Cranked hinges. 400mm are the only size that the hook facelplate will fit the 40mm posts!!

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks.

Turn it to the side and paint it , put some blocks under to keep it off the ground

thats a nice door but i find it odd that it doesn't have a bottom rail.

I hung a lot of doors in my time and especially in external doors i would always recommend a bottom rail. Was it larger and cut down as i can see there is a middle and bottom rail behind the T&G panels but that would mean the end grain of the panels is exposed at the end of the door.

Its M&T top, double M&T middle and bottom, door has been faced T&G
Yes strange finish for bottom of door, more than likely been ripped down by 75/100mm in height to keep the feature of top of door but fit opening, need to see both sides of door maybe?

If your looking for a long lasting finish then use yacht varnish. Here is a gate I varnish 4+ years ago and it still looks well.

I put 6 coats of yacht varnish on this. you will probably only be able to find this varnish in a builders providers.

Make sure to varnish the where you cut out for hinges before you fit them.

When i've been googling i've seen many gates similar tbh, not concerned about a bottom rail, i have seen them made like that with a top curved rail as well but they are stupid money tbh.

I've a few people recommend that on another forum, it's all in the prep by the looks of it.

Cheers

It’s looks like a standard L&B gate?

Looks like it’s been made to that size as the bottom brace has not been cut?

I’m not bothered if it had or not tbh.

I’ve been late replying as my bloody laptop is playing up yet again.

I’m on my mobile atm which I can barely read.

I’ve also had some posts from local joinery as they had done off cuts.

They are 44mm (same width as gate ad my internal doors) x 41mm (this size leaves a 4mm gap either side).

The problem i then had was the hook and band cranked hinge plates were to wide. The largest that would fit are 450mm/16” as the hook plates are 38mm wide.

I have been assured they are fine.

The garage has had a tidy up by there!

I need a good clear out as have cookers/freezers/3 petrol strimmers and about 20 bags top soil to do the lawn ( too late now).

Cheers all
