A lot of films lately are marked as 1080 but are 1920x800
when really it should be 1920x1080

why is this ? Anyone know ? Obviously there is not too much quality lost I wouldn't of thought

Is it just to keep file size down I'm wondering

I assume your talking about the Re-Encoded (X264),(MKV's) etc.. you wont notice the difference the lack of the Extra pixels around 200-300 is actually calculated into the Black bars of most movies in other words what ever encoding tools the ripper uses they dont encode the Black bars as its a pointless task as the area is just Black with no movement. so results in a faster encode with no quality loss

That makes perfect sense and has answered my question :)
Thanks @digi247

I also wondered about that, I mostly have low speech volume the rest is fine but sometime can't here what's being said I think somthing is lost there in the encoding
