neighbour knocked the door yesterday, their 42" philips plasma TV packed in before xmas, they bought a new LCD, and did i want the plasma for 40 quid, so i said yeh ok then, thinking that even if i couldnt fix it, id make the 40 quid back on the boards

worked on it for about 2 hours early hours of this morning, and another hour tonight, and all up and running again :proud:

not bad for 40 notes and a few hours work

ill post some pics later, but really chuffed with it, think ill keep this one

You jammie sod. LOL Well done m8

So you won't be letting the neighbours in again if your keeping it!

its how ive gotten all of my tellys, thats why they offered it instead of throwing it out, 40 quid is better then trying to fit it in the wheely bin she said lol

ive been given, and bought (dirt cheap) so many broken tellys, that ive got a flatscreen in every bedroom, the living room, even the kitchen lol, and the only one ive bought new was the kitchen one for 99 quid on offer a few years ago

the basic lcd/plasma repair course i did a few years ago just to kill some time was one of the best things ive done

I'd be up for some of that! How long a course n how much got any details?

Maybe you could run ya own course for DW members. LOL

it was run in swansea college, just to kill some time, between me completing the RDI course and before my systems design course started, it wasnt really a laid out course, there was just a gap of a few weeks, so the lecturer asked if any of us would be interested in finding out about common faults, how to diagnose them, and do basic repairs, i jumped at the chance, it was a day a week for a month

since then ive repaired a 50" plasma for 12p, this 42" for less than 60p, the kids have LCDs in the bedrooms that cost pennies to fix

if i could find a proper dedicated course though, id go in it, as i actually carry out repairs on tellys, receivers and consoles either on my living room floor (if its a big telly) or on my kitchen unit lol

i know there was talk of an electronics repair section being started a few months ago, not too sure if it did get going though, ill have a browse about

I gather most new tv's are pretty modular and once you get the hang of diagnosing common problems with models it's just swapping boards and stuff??

pretty much m8

ive got loads of 'bits' of tellys in the attic, where ive bought 2 that are identical, but one has a smashed screen, then opened them up, and the only thing the same was the screen lol

most 'generic' faults are either power supplies, or the invertor boards controlling the backlights on LCDs, so over the last year, ive been teaching myself, with internet guidance, to repair power supplies at component level instead of trying to source an entire board, repairing this 42", ive done about 4 hours reading, an hour testing, and maybe 10 mins actually repairing

i dont think the picture is as good as my 37" LCD though looking side by side

i know i`m jumpin in here i`v got a samsung lcd when you try to switch it on the screen is blank for about 10 mins then it comes to life what o you think that would be mate

That sounds interesting m8, I wonder how many others here would get involved.

I would head up a thread with 50" plasma for 12p are u Interested!

You've now got me googling:
h**p://plasmalcdtvrepair.rankwell.net/2009/02/tips-on-how-to-find-relevant-tv-repair.html

this was the thread i read for this model,

Philips plasma repair advice thread - Page 31 - AVForums.com

all 31 pages of it, the power supply board i have is only mentioned 3 times in the whole thread, and only one other person mentioned the same problem i had, so in the end, i thought sod it, ill just check all of the components i think it 'could' be, replaced 2 anyway without checking, then found 3 that registered as faulty, changed those, and job done

When I was off work for a while I did a City & Guilds 2240 in Electronics Servicing.

That was fault finding, testing components, soldering diagnosis etc.

Can't remember much of it now though.

I would be really interested in a course/thread of this as i am always tinkering with bits and bobs and diagnosing problems myself have had some great stuff cheap over the years also, your a leg end digi hats off, lol.

just won a 27" samsung lcd and a 16" panasonic LCD on ebay, 43 quid the pair, both good screens, picking them up tomorrow evening, both faulty though

Fix this for me please, cheers

Your rubbing it in now! LOL

Is there a pool going to guess the amount you need to spend to get em going? Is 12p for the 50" plasma the best yet?

yep 12p for the 50" is the best so far, although i have had smaller LCDs that ive fixed for free,
the samsung sounds like an invertor problem, i do have another samsung here with a smashed screen, so if i get one going between the 2 tellys, itll work out about 45 quid cost, and the panasonic sounds like a power supply problem

i use a link that was posted in gen chat ages ago to search ebay, it only lists items that are pickup only, and within a certain radius of your postcode, i use this to find the tellys that are within 50 miles of me, as i work all over, pickup is not a problem as long as the seller can hold on to it for a few days

i then use a sniper tool to slam a bid of 25 quid in (or 30 quid for 42-60") in the last 2 seconds

75% of the time ill win, and if i dont, then it bumps up the price the seller gets for it :)
