I recently bought a dishwasher & was offered a 5 yr extended warrenty from Comet for £149 which I thought was quite expensive. Anyway as a result a started hunting around on the net for an alternative (as you do) & came across a company called Domestic & General Warranty | Extended Warranties for Appliances, Heating, Boiler Electrical | Domestic & General . I gave them a call & the salesman told me that they are the adminstrators for Comet, now I cant confirm 4 sure if this is a fact or simply a sales pitch but they quoted me a price of £79.99 for the same warrenty product. If they are the true administrators of the comet warrenty then I for 1 will never buy another warrenty from Comets again. BTW this should also apply to PC-world.

D&G underwrite most electrical product extended warranties m8

took one out with D&G for a fridge freezer, had a lot of problems with it and they could never fix the problem (about 7 different visits from engineers over a 2 1/2 year period) anyway the last engineer to come out said it was a manufacturers fault and the applience should be scrapped. got a letter from D&G and we have to pay the delivery charge direct from the supplier for the replacement and it is £62.93........also £15 to take away old fridge freezer after many phone calls and threatening to contact tv prog watchdog (or whatever it is called) they have waived the delivery charge but still wanted the removal cost, told them I would do it myself as the local tip is about 5 minutes away.

my D&G story....lol...

£79.99 sounds very cheap for a 5 years -- u sure it wasnt for one year??

Hmm.

Don't want to argue with you mate, but your posts so far seem to me like spam.

:)

These sort of appliances are covered by the manufacturers warranty for at least 12 months , so you are paying for a year for nothing .
Most things these days will last for a least a couple of years without giving any trouble so after that you would be better of just scrapping it and getting a new one
They are a total rip off in my opinion

after you have had something from comet for 12 months you usually get a letter for extra cover for cheaper from d&g
and believe me domestic and general are wa*k,
took a total of about 12 visits from different engineers and different parts for them to fix my ma`s washer,at one point they virtually replaced most of it then if fecked up hours after ,next guy said it needed scrapping even thought it didnt, about a week after that another engineer came out before they finally fixed it

the money she spent in phonecalls and comet passing her to hotpoint and them passing her to d&g she could of had a good deposit to buy another

If Some of you have found both Comet & D & G warrenties troublesome? then i'm not surprised as they are one & the same as far as i'm concerned but I do think some of you guys maybe missing my point.

Why buy a comet warrenty (for almost double the price in my case) If you can go straight to the source (D & G) & get the same Cheaper?

BTW Many other companies also will sell you an extended an warrenty for goods you bought independently so shop around... dont feel pressured into buying it in-store at the time of purchase & remember "Google is your friend" ;)

would it not be covered under the eu law, read some where in england you get a min of 5 years cover

i remember when i bought a toaster from currys and it was at the time 14.99 and the sales dude

asked if i wanted the extended warranty for 25.00 its laughable because i just said if it goes

wrong after the warranty period i just buy another and save myself a tenner.

never bought extended warranty for the simple reason i have never ever had a product go bang after the 12 months was up..............just another way of giving em free money

all extended warranties are a ripoff when bought in store a the time of purchase they make all their profit from selling these warranties according to watchdog and consumer agencies

and most electrical products will last more than the manufacturers guarantee period and there will then be a better model or a cheaper one just look at lcd tvs and computers

I had a similar experience just last week, I bought an Electric rice cooker for £9.99 from Argos & the sales girl asked "would you like to buy insurance for that?"....I looked at her shocked... when she saw the expression on my face she went all red faced & whispered "Sorry I have to ask" ... lol

Under the EU sales of goods act we are entitled for a 2 year warrent against any defect of any electrical product, all we have to do is keep proof of purchase and take it to the and take it to the store where we brought it.

There was a case in the news a few months ago where a man brought a tv from Tes*O and returned in after 1 1/2 years being faulty. Tes*o said get lost and when he got his solicitors invovled they caved in right away and gave him a replacement.

and i heard somewhere under uk law it was 6 years. It was in the telegraph a while ago

comet, currys, dixons, pcworld, all the same crappy warranties which in reality arent worth the peper they get printed on!!

on the flip side if your buying something with a bit of value, say £400+ then you can normally get a bit of discount if you take the warranty, then once youve gone simply use the 14 day cooling off period to cancel your warranty at no cost but still getting the discount
