Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi retired from international duty after missing in a penalty shootout as Chile won the Copa America final.

"For me the national team is over. I've done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion," Messi said.

The 29-year-old was making his 112th appearance for Argentina since making his debut in 2005.

Lionel Messi has been named in Argentina's World Cup qualifiers squad, less than two months after retiring from international football.

Messi, 29, quit after Argentina's Copa America final defeat by Chile in June.

But in a statement reported by media in Argentina, the Barcelona striker said he made the U-turn for the "love of the country" and "to help from within".

Argentina play qualifiers against Uruguay and Venezeula at the beginning of September.

Messi missed in the penalty shootout defeat by Chile, as Argentina lost a fourth major final in nine years.

"A lot of things went through my mind on the night of the final and I gave serious thought to quitting, but my love for my country and this shirt is too great," Argentina's all-time record goalscorer is reported as saying.

"We need to fix many things in Argentinian football, but I prefer to do this from inside and not criticise from outside."

He has done the right thing.
The lad plays the best football in world.
He never looks at the camera and brushes his hair.
(Like the 2nd best player in the world)
He plays with a smile on his face. When you look at Wayne Rooney and others who looks like there chewing a wasp in every game then messi who enjoys the game makes it better to watch.
Unbelivable he sliped through riverplates fingers and went to news old boys then Barcelona.
