Hi I'm thinking of getting myself a new vu solo 4K and would like to hear from other members who have one or been using one what they think...
What is the picture quality like say on a SD channel is it the same as any other receiver or is it any better? Does it upscale etc How is zapping etc...
Or anything else I may find useful.
Many thanks ajt.

Can you wait until christmas day for an answer :)

I've got one here but not opened it yet.

I opened the box to make sure it was not damaged build quality for the little time I had it in my hands seems no better than a technomate, does not seem like a £400.00 box but I'll see when i turn it on, from what I've read channel zapping is much faster than the duo 2.

Love mine.

SD picture is reasonable, it does a better job of upscaling than most tv's will manage, but when you upscale 576i to 2160p it's never going to look amazing.

However 1080i/p content to 2160p does look impressive (so long as it's not massively compressed to start with).

Zap time similar (but slightly quicker) to the Duo2, boot time again similar but slightly faster.

i was tempted but got a solo2 ...

Question - does the stream buffer? what channels are there that are 4k?

The streaming depends on the image and the version of gstreamer being used afaik.

Reading around i have seen that the speed is the fastest of any box to date with instant zapping etc but alot of users say that the up-scaling is not very good and has left them disappointed..
I guess its down to each user how they perceive the picture quality but i was hoping SD would upscale nicely and improve the quality over a non 4k vu box.

I have a 4k lg tv and was hoping a 4k box would make the sd better.

I think most users were expecting an SD picture to suddenly become UHD quality and clearly that is never going to happen.

As it is, the SD picture quality is no worse than say from a Solo2 or Duo2, but I couldn't honestly say it was any better either (I have a high end 4K tv, so it doesn't do a bad job of upscaling a 1080p signal to 2160p anyway), so switching between the Duo2 with an SD channel running at 1080p output and the tv upscaling to 2160p and running the Solo4K at 2160p upscaling the same SD channel doesn't give much difference (to me) in picture quality, but on a cheaper 4K tv, i've heard that the Solo4K does upscale SD nicely.

But 1080p HD upscaled to 2160p on the Solo4K looks great, the last couple of F1 races of the season for example were awesome.

I know people will knock me for this but I don't have a 4k tv, I never opted for one of the 1300mhz boxs such as solo2 or duo 2 or any other but when this next gen box with 1500mhz came out I wanted to be an early adopter. I'm looking at this box more for it's speed and for running Kodi.

If your going from an older 400mhz (or lower) box, your going to love the S4K and you will wonder how you managed for so long with such a slow box.

You will notice a speed improvement straight away, but you will notice it 10 fold, if you use the S4K for a few days, and then go and use your old box again.

I do have a 400mhz box in the tm-twin but I have been playing recently with a technomate tm-nano-se dual core 751mhz box. Its pretty quick but it should be in a different league to the solo 4k.

If you are getting a Solo 4K, you are better off getting a unicable LNB to benefit from the new tuner type. The simplest way that I heard unicable LNB being described as was "A quattro LNB has all four quadrants down four cables. A unicable LNB has all four quadrants using one cable".

If you use two outputs from a conventional LNB, you will have 2 independent tuners, and also 6 "loop through" tuners.
If you use two outputs from a Unicable LNB to the Solo 4K, it will be as if you have 8 independent tuners.

Is a unicable LNB only compatible with Unicable enabled tuners/boxes or can it be used for regular tuners also?

I am going to leave the detailed answer to the installation experts. Quite a few of the older receivers can use unicable LNBs. Those receivers/tuners are not as versatile as the tuners on the Solo 4K.

Correct they only work with compatible Unicable (FBC) Receivers

I have just finished converting a 1080p movie to 4K to watch on my 4K telly..
Won't be doing this again took 24 hours to convert and the file was 130GB wow.

Not too sure why you would convert a 1080p source up to 4K standard your just upscaling an already 1920x1080p source to 3840x2160.

you wont see any benefit
