Just got some sad news that someone i know died yesterday from swine flu.
It wasn't someone close to me so im not grieving but i am very shocked at how quick he went and the fact he was a healthy 42yrld.

I don't know the exact circumstances but i was told he felt ill early last week but for some stupid reason he never went to his doctors.
He spent 2days with a blanket wrapped round him and sweating badly and it was only when he developed breathing problems on the 3rd day that his missus phoned an ambulance.
He was on a life support machine for 4days and he died yesterday from pneumonia.

My wee sister was with his girlfriend today and naturally she is in total shock.
It just puts a different view in your head when it happens close to home.
I had quite a light view on swine flu and i kept in mind that the media and government never gauge these things well but it is important to be alert and look after yourselves.

I can't believe he never got himself checked out by a doctor.

sorry to hear this m8 :( this will be reported as actually dying from 'previously undiagnosed serious medical conditions' though :(

I am so sorry to hear this mate I really am :(

This is the very reason why I have been trying to drum home the seriousness of this illness :( It is not so much the illness that cause deaths but the secondary infections (such as pneumonia).

If ya need a chat or want more info give us a msg mate.

take care

Your kinda right mate, prob be reported as swine flu being a contributor .... which yes it is in all cases.... as I said, its the secondary infections that the illness causes that takes its toll on most. :(

Thanks for your post fella,
Like i said, im not grieving as such am just a bit stunned at the reality that swine flu is a killer.
I just haven't thought of it in those terms until now which is stupid as its had so much publicity..

This is the huge problem we in the nhs are faced with as a whole mate, so many people are saying "its only flu" it is not.
As long as you seek medical help when your body is telling you too, e.g. profuse sweating, lack of urine output, difficulty waking up etc... you increase your chances a lot. By no means does this guarantee that you will be ok but it sure makes it more likely.

Sadly, it is largely down to ignorance. I was not too worried to begin with, in regards to its effect on me as I was pretty healthy and knew the signs.. but having pneumonia recently I an now bricking it as my lungs are going to be shot for a while.

Be careful people and

IF IN DOUBT.... GET IT CHECKED OUT !

Alright Stuart, sorry to hear that mate, Think something like this is all on the back burner in terms of how serious it could be unless something closer to home actually happens then it makes you think a bit more about it.

I was supposedly ment to have it but thought it was personally mild to me, but everyone reacts different.

Must be a hard one to sink in.

Very, very sad news mate. Thoughts go out to his family.

Cheers Chris.
A few people i know said the same as you fella about it being mild and i think i just had that as a mindset.
Its the fact that he sat 2days in real pain and done nothing, that's the part that makes it hard to understand..

Sad to here this mate, it's worrying when something you only see on the telly starts to effect people in your life, I don't know anyone who's had this swine flu yet, but I'm starting to worry what this winter could bring.

Condolences to his family.

cheers

That's terrible news hoppy. I feel for that poor blokes family.

With the mixed news about the anti viral's out there people are so damned confused. Even if you are told that you have swine flu there is so much bad press regarding the effectiveness of Tamiflu people are left unsure whether they should take the drug or not. This probably aids in the spread of the virus.

the thing is Munkey, people think Tamiflu is a "Cure" it is not.... it can simply help with some of the symptoms. I think I explained how it works before, in basic terms......

It prevents the virus from escaping from the cells it infects, thus causing the cells to die and not release the virus that has multiplied inside. So, H1N1 infects cell 1, then cell 1 has say 30x H5N1 waiting to escape and infect 30 more cells. The tamiflu breaks this cycle by preventing the cell wall from destructing.... thus helps with the symptoms by slowing the virus down.

Hope that helps people understand the way in which it has been explained to me that this medicine works.

Terrible news mate.

I, like countless others I suppose, always like to think 'it won't happen to my family we are all fit' but it shows we are all at risk if we ignore the signs.

Thanks to RS for the info as well.

:)

Thanks for the replies guys its appreciated.
I understand there are different views about swine flu and your all entitled to your opinion.
Tbh until today i hadn't given it a second thought although i was aware of it.

Dougie was a very healthy 42yrld guy and i met him only 2 weeks ago at the gym with his son who he was training for amateur boxing.
I don't want people to become paranoid about swine flu, all im saying is if you feel unwell and suspect swine flu then go to your doctor.
If that can kill a healthy guy in 7days then in my book its something to be vigilant about.

@witchy--- its not about mourning mate, like i said i didn't know him that well, i was just shocked at what happened.

Thanks for clearing that up mate.

terrible news..... just like with most things, it only hits you when it happens close to home...

Very sorry to hear that Stuart. My thoughts go out to you and his family.

Brings it home Hoppy, Thoughts go out to you all.

Scary shit.

It reduces the flu effects by one day at best.

The secondary effects are untouched.
