[Dundee is threatened by a mugger with a switchblade]
Sue Charlton: Mick, give him your wallet.
Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee: What for?
Sue Charlton: He's got a knife.
Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee: [chuckling] That's not a knife.
Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee: [Dundee draws a large Bowie knife]
Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee: *That's* a knife.
[Dundee slashes the teen mugger's jacket. He and his friends run away]

What an intresting debate and i have to say well done everyone for keeping it non racial. Lets call it cultural. I still think we have a lot to learn about each others culture.
Intresting about the sord thingy being legal. Im sure Scotsmen are alllowed to wear the dirk (Skien du) in there natural dress but try getting into a night club or on to a plane. No chance.
On the police side of things i think its wrong turbans are ok as headwear as lone as its part of the uniform ie with a police badge on it.
1 last point are seiks exempt from wearing crash helmets on motor cycles?

oooh gosh you lot have opened a big can a worms and all I can say before you start judging Sikhs who carry the Kirpan please read up on the Religion and understand the reason behind it before jumping to conclusions. Google is your friends and they are thousands of site one on the web for everyone to asks questions and learn about the Sikh Religion if they wish to do so.

Not all Sikhs wear the Kirpan, I am Sikh but not a baptised Sikh... Those who are baptised Sikhs follow the religion fully that includes wearing the 5k's.

Honestly I dont see the point about arguing what the Law says and comments like if they are in this country they should abide the laws of this country. Well I have news for you they do. Also just to let you know for security reasons they are not allowed to wear their Kirpan on Aeroplanes.

Regarding Clubs, Pubs etc you will very rarely see a baptised Sikh there and if there is one then the bouncer will let them in at their own discretion. Sikhs arent Violent people and dont go round showing off they carry their Kirpan.

It is legal for a Sikh to carry the Kirpan on UK streets how ever it is not legal to use it and usually they are very small versions which go underneath their shirts and tops.

I hope this clears up some of the misconceptions but like I said please refrain from making irate comments and ask questions in the appropriate places.

***EDIT***
Here are a couple of links where you can learn more and do some general reading.

A baptised Sikh wouldnt, it doesnt say you cant drink you cant do this you cant do that. It says you should respect your body and not intoxicate yourself. Thats not a quote btw.

Again im not a expert by no means. So if you want ask questions use the forums from the links I posted. Questions like these get asked all the time so you wont even after post you will be able to find the answer just by browsing through the forums.

Can Sikhs drink alcohol, unlike Muslims?

The Sikh Code of Conduct states, "A Sikh must not take hemp, opium, liquor, tobacco, or any intoxicant." At the time of initiation, a Sikh vows not to use any intoxicant. Drinking alcohol is forbidden for Sikhs.

A baptised Sikh wouldnt
I respectfully beg to differ m8 lol .. 2 of 3 the guys I spoke of a few posts ago were baptised Sikhs and and loved a drink (or 2 .. lol) which is good :) I knew you religion didn't ban alcohol, I must say that as for the Kirpan I am told that there has never been a Sikh arrested for pulling it out and threatening anyone

Well theres always some undercover people who act all goody goody but its a minority and happens in every religion.

I wasn't having a dig m8 I think it's good that they liked a drink, other religions that ban this and ban that are Repressive religion if you ask me

Didnt think you were having a dig, it happens all the time... But you got to remember even those someone has the appearance of a baptised Sikh doesnt mean they are. A baptised Sikh wouldnt openly drink if he did. But a Punjabi who has turban and beard might openly drink.

Thats when Culture get confused with Religion. The Punjabi Culture is older than the Sikh Religion.

I think this thread has turned into curiosity and a laugh more than anything else and I certainly don't think that anyone was judging Sikhs in any post.

But thanks for the very informative post Bally! Certainly cleared up a few 'wonderings' :)
