Hp DV7 Laptop wifi bluetooth card replacement N band 5Ghz

Hi all

It appears my 'top of the range' laptop does not support N band wifi !! even tho the wifi card states ''Ralink RT3090 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter''

From looking around it seems this card is only one channel, but also has blue-tooth included which I would like to keep.

I have found a few posts but not located in the UK so dont know if the cards will work they suggested. I want to replace the wifi/bluetooth card with one that supports 5ghz N band, as I have virgin 60meg and would like the full speed tbh.


Anyone know what card will work with N band as well as support my bluetooth. I know I could just use a wifi adapter but dont really want something hanging out side with 3 dogs and 2 kids lol !

I dont know if this would help or not as i aint too good with laptops i am with desktops but not sure if this is what sort of thing your looking for?

Looks same as what it takes. I've no idea either tbh tho as some won't let it boot.

Yeah i am not to sure tbh mate lappys arnt my thing even tho i use one prefer desktops as i know where i am with them lol.

I'm not too sure what dv7 it is either as that's all it says in setting an there isn't anything on base.

Mini-PCIe is mini-PCIe.

This isn't typically a user changed part, and there are that many manufacturers that they don't usually list the card in the specs so that they can just put in whatever is to hand/cheapest.

If the control software isn't telling you which model is installed currently, the best bet is to go into device manager and see if the device ID is of any help.

Hi bud.

This is what shows currently

Ralink RT3090 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter

The Ralink RT3090 seems to be a wireless chipset, in that there are also desktop cards coming up on a Google search. It does indicate that it's only N-150, rather than N-300, though.

The wifi card's model name is based on the chipset number; Ralink RT3090BC4.

There is one on ebay.com, which shows it to be a mini-PCIE (rather than mini-PCI).

Problem I have bud is I need a 5ghz and bluetooth card for laptop. Ideally that is duel band

AFAIK dual band just means 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz? Unless you mean MIMO?

Will that deffo work with my laptop tho as on looking around there are quite a few that won't due to something to do with bios white list ?

I'd not heard of that before. Apparently even buying an alternate card listed in the manual is not guaranteed to work

A quick look into it suggests there are modified BIOSes to get around whitelist and use any wifi card, but this voids your warranty.

Warranty isn't an issue. It's about 3 years old now I think. Just need to use faster wifi as I stream my cctv an it lags, download isn't great either.


So shall I buy that card ? Do you think we can deffo get it working if it don't plug an play ?

Only problem you may run into is if the antenna for 5Ghz mode isn't built onto the card, the 2.4Ghz antenna currently installed may not work.

How can I tell if it's built Into the card bud ? Shall I take some pics of my current one.

Without checking to see if the new card has an indication screen printed on it, I'm not sure. The tech docs I've looked at on the Intel website don't seem to mention it, but they're not very in depth.

Won't help. The clips for the wifi antenna are universal.
