Oops, Jeremy Clarkson has been promoting his ratings again:
Jeremy Clarkson 'Slope' Comment Could Mean BBC Is Sued For £1 Million
JC probably knew exactly what he was saying but I had to look it up.
Coincidentally, my brother told me about a talk he gave to some teenagers recently about wine making. When he got to 'racking' the horrified gasps suggested he'd said something inappropriate. It turns out that 'racking' means either masturbation or a wallop in the nuts in 'yoof-speak' depending on which faction you're talking to.
So, I thought I'd do some research on slang, racist/sexist/something-else-ist terms that have been misappropriated or mangled in case I offended anyone. There are hundreds if not thousands.
For example, '10% off', did YOU know it was a racial slur (Jews)?
Anyway, look them up yourself at The Racial Slur Database
I've decided not to get involved. I will continue to use words in Standard English (both context and meaning) and if the PC Brigade don't like it they can swivel on something pointy and sharp. I will studiously ignore their wails of protest along with their supercilious and anally-retentive demeanour.
On a more technical note, my aging Draytek is about to give up the ghost, needing daily reboots as it does. Fortunately, my night in shining armour (in the form of BT) should be here on Thursday next to install fibre.
Which of course means I should be able to offend the po-faced considerably more rapidly.
In the meantime, may your beer be cold and your barbecue hot
