Zone Alarm

I used to use Zone Alarm all the time, until I started having problems using winmx for downloading mp3's, whenever I tried to download from winmx the downloads would never start unless I closed Zone Alarm down.

I've just reinstalled Zone Alarm and am having exactly the same problem, I've set it to allow internet connection and to allow server for winmx but still no joy... Can anybody offer any suggestions?

Cheers guys.

maybe cosmoss, that winmx is littered with blag files such as phone dailers etc,

and it wont let them through, as most of the newbies, seem to be getting these scams,
which in the end puts them off surfing the net,

perhaps just as speccy an yourself micky, an gazer, that zone alarm is the tops,

http://grc.com/lt/scoreboard.htm

in the leak test it,s the only firewall thats never been passed when configured correctly, mcafee

norton etc have all failed , check it out,
regards scoot

Yes I've checked grc.com, I know it's a good firewall, but winmx has no dodgy diallers etc, it's just a bona-fide file sharing client, for some reason zone alrm doesnt like it, I'm sure it's something to do with the config on zone alarm but I can't work out what it is.

scoot you sound like someone whos never used win mx dodgy diallers come on.

correct m8 y give it a miss from now on though eh , lol, regards scoot

Scoot, please restrict your advice to when its a subject you know something about, you may know zone alarm but it seems you dont know winmx.

I know both progs very well and I'm looking for some expert help here.

I know you're only trying to help m8 but unless you know the answer... well... leave it to those that do.

Keep up the good work m8, you are a credit to the forum.

Ive used ZA a few times in the past but somehow felt uncomfy with it and always gone back to Norton product. I am not too familiar with it but it does sound like the problem lies in the settings as you said. There is nothing to stop you using two firewalls at the same time. If you have to disarm ZA in order to download from Winmx and you feel uncomfortable about dropping your guard then you will still have your second firewall running.

cosmoss have you checked the settings in zone alarm pro to allow it to connect to the internet ????

zone alarm does not choose what to let through thats your job all it does is block everything else that is incoming and any programs that try to use your connection to connect with out your say so.

i cannot see why you cannot use winmx please tell me what ports winmx uses to connect to the internet ???, and also what version of ZA are you running and OS etc

so this program runs with ZA disarmed ???

let me know and i will help ou out

Right Mickie, this is all the info I have, hope you make something of all this.

I am running ZA, I dont think it's the pro version but not entirely sure, against Win mx I have a tick under Allow connect against both "local" and "internet" I also have the same 2 ticks under Allow server, there is no tick in "Pass Lock" although I have tried ticking this but still no joy. Security is set to medium on local and high on Internet.

Win mx listens on port 6699 for incoming TCP connections and on port 6257 for incoming UDP packets (these are both default settings found under firewall/network settings).

When I do a search on Winmx with ZA running it produces very few results, and I am unable to download anything, also nobody downloads anything from me even though I am sharing over 4000 mp3's.

As soon as I turn Zona Alarm off I get hundreds of results by using the same search criteria as before and am able to download as normal, as can others download from me.

Hope you understand all this m8, let me know if you need any further info.

and speccy thanks for that suggestion, I hadnt thought of running 2 firewalls, if Mickie is unable to sort this out then thats worth consideration.

consider myself told, lol,

sorry was only tring to help,

but you are perfectly right sometimes advice given incorrectly can make matters worse ,

now where,s that footy forum , regards scoot

Scoot I Know you were only trying to help m8, I hope no offence was taken, I just needed a bit more in-depth knowledge than that.
