XBMC 10.0

It’s been a LONG time coming. Too long. But here it is.

XBMC 10.0 “Dharma” is ready for consumption. Those who have been following development know that add-ons are the main focus of this release. In the past, in order to find a new skin, you would have to dig through the forums, find a link, and hope it worked. Ditto for plugins, scrapers, etc.

Those days are over. All of these things are now available within XBMC, no need to put down the remote to find new content or change the look of your HTPC. Just head to the “add-ons” section in the system menu. At the time of this writing, there are 11 different skins available, all with distinct looks and personalities. But we didn’t stop there. Want to watch your favorite youtube videos? Listen to some web radio or podcasts? Install a web interface to control your living-room experience, or even one to manage your media? It’s all available in the new add-ons system. Even before the final release, we have seen an average of 50,000 add-on downloads per day. It’s time for you to see what many others have discovered! And remember, the best part is that the add-ons are very much alive. New ones are being added every day, and current ones are continuously updated.

But that’s just the beginning of Dharma. We have improved the entire experience. As always, we strive to play all of the current media formats available, including the new WebM/VP8 codec that is the latest buzz. Hardware acceleration has been added in windows (Vista or 7) via DXVA2, CrystalHD has been added for all platforms (best supported in OSX and Linux), VDPAU support has been improved in Linux, and VAAPI support has been added for the hardware that supports it in Linux. There are far too many improvements to list here, so check out the changelog for a full list.

For those of you who would like to see what XBMC is all about without disturbing your current system, give XBMC Live a shot. It’s a bootable LiveCD that boots directly into XBMC, and even provides a nice graphical installer (check in “Programs”). If your htpc doesn’t have a cdrom, check out UNetbootin to create a bootable flash drive. And don’t forget to check out the iPhone and Android XBMC remotes, they’re the perfect companion to your mediacenter.

We have spent almost a year on Dharma and we hope that you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed creating it. XBMC continues to be a great example of open-source software and community-based development. Maybe we’ll find some time to kick back in our media rooms for a few days and enjoy the experience… or maybe we’ll just get to work on Eden.

Note that the skins in the Skins Gallery page has not yet been updated to match the newly available skins. Look for a website revamp that includes a live add-ons browser in the near future.

Update: Shoutcast support via the addon was broken at the last minute (yesterday!) by a change made by AOL. See here, here, and here. We have mailed them asking for an exception, but if they wouldn’t do it for VLC, they aren’t likely to do it for us either. We are looking into other options.

Thats the dogs bollocks mate. Cheers. I've just installed on my ubuntu netbook. Now to have a play about with it,

That looks like the dogs nuts man, i've been playing quite a lot with windows media center, so going to give this a go the night, i'd like eventually to get a HTPC set up with this on (for those interested i've got the dreambox and Iplayer etc all working on the existing media center, check previous posts)

Will have a play with this when i get home.

Thanks

Guys how do you get a remote working with a pc? I remember years ago i had an usb infrared eye thing that i tried to get working with dvb or something, any recommendations?
Thanks

Dibbers do you have an Android phone or iphone there is a remote for them ;) and yes if you have no infra red on lap top or pc then you will need a remote with the red eye...

Have you guys only just seen xbmc? I have been running it for years in this form and plex which is an osx port...

what do you use it for though mate, do you have a dedicated pc for this alone, is it just for playing movies and listening to music, what other things can these be used for, iv heard loads about it and people on here mentioning it all the time, but whats different to just streaming from a laptop or pc, am i missing the possibilities here!

this is xbmc all started for me years ago when i decided i was going to build one and bought a DVB-C card, then all the fun and games started and to this day i haven't managed to build one.

Brought numerous PC's and that home stripped, wiped, cleaned and reformatted only to find that they don't have the performance to run windows media center or xbmc etc.......

I've played with the xbox 360 windows media center and got some decent stuff going, so happy with it, but all ways wanted a HTPC just for this, streaming movies, got my eye on a graphics card with HDMI output bu 1st have to build a machine...

did have another xbox next door and one in the bedrooms so some home plugs are needed as my network can't cope with constant traffic above 15 - 20 meg, think it's the shitty network cable i have between rooms rather than a CAT5 or some thing better. edit actually did get this working now i come to think of it but i didn't have a machine good enough to sit next door and stream to it.....only this main pc in the lab that's got enough balls to work, works! lololol....

any way, I'm sure I'll get there, just had a spy at xbmc on the fly and it looks good, but gotta like windows media center at the moment with all the add ons, media scout etc, brings all the covers and back grounds back from the web....saying that was running it from disk (xbmc) so once it's installed it'll probs be cool as looks like there's add on's etc for this.

one day I'll be sorted!

i aint got a bloody glue,
i cant even play music with this?:proud:

pmsl :proud:...

i cant seem to play anything either... been trying to play video, but cant lol. ive browsed the right folders and selected the video but how to play, god knows lol...

lots of head scratching going on here :err:

lol, ha! it's dead easy m8...

I'll get my capture card set up some time for what i have running on the xbox 360 (and windows media center on the pc) and show you that, this looks good, but I'll have to have a play see what add-ons etc are like, i just ain't got enough machines to run it on, i need like 3 streamers! lol,

got a main PC here that does it but that's not got HDMI output and need to leave this on all the time, she's louder than me tele at times the old horse what she is....sounds like a Chinook landing on my head. then have xbox next door that i can stream from this PC on but that's only in scart, got a TV here that has HDMI but this is in the lab, such a confusing set up, be a good idea for me to rip it all out and start again!

any way mate have you got this loaded on your PC?

i used the "onthefly" version so you don't have to install it to have a look at it.

then just go to settings and point the audio/video settings to your folders with your music etc in then go back to audio or video and your files will appear ready for playing!

mork calling orson, come in orson lol

i`ll have a play with it, ive got a dual boot linux / win 7 media center, i just dont like running XBMX on top of anything else if you know what i mean, so when i get time, i`ll pop this on. My only fear is not getting my beloved xbox 1 remote conrtol to work with it, everytime a new version comes out i have to keep re-writing my guide.

xbmc 9.04 setting up NTS share and samba, plus xbox 1 remote - XBMC Community Forum

I would suggest anyone wishing to have a proper play before commiting to a full install create a bootable USB drive from the LiveCD.

Boot the LiveCD then Goto the program menu n u should find the wizard.

Once you have a bootable USB you can edit n save your changes!

CheckOut Addons as you'll find some good stuff.

IMHO XBMC With the right Hardware is by far the best HD Network Media player, but is not Plug n Play! You do have to put a bit of work in!

I have mine on a HTPC well my old pc with an ati 54xx card for hdmi out and hd video...

I use it for movies and music. It has a nice user friendly interface and will get media info unlike a lot of little media players. there are a multitude of addons for them to play with like apple trailers, some steaming xxx etc...

It is very easy to set up just instal it start it and point it at your media it will then creat a library of all movies.
