Detectives were questioning a taxi driver on Monday after a young woman died after falling from his cab.
Katie Bennett, 22, died in hospital from head injuries she sustained after falling out of the taxi in the early hours of Saturday morning in Staffordshire.
"I can now confirm that the taxi driver involved has been arrested and is helping police with inquiries," said a Staffordshire Police spokeswoman.
Police said Bennett had taken the taxi with five other friends from Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent to Newchapel.
The others got out of the car after it arrived at about 2 a.m. on Newchapel High Street, but Bennett was still in the car as it moved off.
She fell from the car while it was in motion and suffered severe head injuries.
Detectives are appealing to anyone who saw the incident to come forward.
