A friend of mine just got a new laptop with windows 8 and paid an extra £100 for Microsoft office.

I told him he should have dl open office instead.
He said that Windows 8 will only allow you to install paid for applications?

Is he talking sh*t
Did he get conned by the guy from PC World?

I need a new laptop, but if this is true am not getting one with Windows 8

Open office supports windows 8

I'd say so seen as it supports it.

He got conned by PC world.

There is a version of Windows 8 for tablets that only allows installs of applications from microsoft store but for standard Windows 8 for desktops/laptops there is no restriction.

Metro/ModernUI applications need to come from the app store, desktop applications can come from anywhere, as normal.

The guy above is referring to Windows RT, which only has Metro/ModernUI and no classical desktop.

It's a simple bit of confusion, but we know it was a blatant lie coming from PC World. I've had them swear blind they can tell the difference on quality with youtube videos when you use a £50 HDMI cable. Tsk.

Personally, I find the Metro/ModernUI stuff a bit useless, so I don't really use it at all, except for when reading magazines on my XPS 12 in tablet mode. The app store is almost empty, and what's there is a little trashy... :/
