Was running VMware ESXi 3.5 on a box with a couple of VMs when the primary hard drive expired. Happily the datastores were on another volume (and backed up).

What could be easier? New hard drive and install ESXi 4.1 straight off the CD with a few minor tweaks mainly the IP address.

Install the Infrastructure Client and pull the datastore into the Inventory, browse the datastore and add the VMs to the Inventory.

Start the VMs.

Job done!

:)

yeap, ideal when you are doing hardware refresh. Could use vmotion for even higher uptime while doing hardware migration if you want to.

VM is some serious dark magic indeed. Really well thought out

when you start looking deeper into vmware .. then stuff like transparent page/memoory sharing, numa aware .. it really is some magic

I have to say that after playing with Hyper-V for the last month or so I am pretty impressed. Microsoft have pretty much caught up with vmware in most areas.
