usb loader and wiifree hard mod

my boys wii is one of the first ones out, and is chipped with pic and wiifree. he now wants the configurable usb loader on it, but when i did mine, i removed the pic chip, softmodded it, and went from there, but that was so long ago i cant remember what i did

can i add the usb loader to his hard modded wii, or will i need to remoce the pic and softmod it first?

I still have the chip in mine
a mate soft modded mine and said that the soft mod will override chip (if I remember right)
