have A TV with built-in media player....
usually add .avi movies to my ext.hdd and watch on Tv.....no probs

recently I added a few .avi movies but media player says they are unsupported file types......

does anyone know any idea why it recognises most but not all .avi files

it's probably the codec thats changed somehow (divx, xvid, etc)

what model TV? might be worth seeing if there's any sort of firmware update for it.

Got to remember that AVI is a container for the media, it does not specify the encoding protocol. Most common ones by far as xvid and divx but there are others out there. Even within xvid and divx, there are different version that are not backwardly compatible 100%. So you need the appropiate codec on your playback device that matches the codec used for doing the encoding.

Basically see if there is an update available for your TV else you may need to re-encoding the files with a codec that is compatible with your TV.

as said with .avi beign a container, it could very well be the audio type is unsupported.
