Took off '08 Astra heat shield

Most reliable piles of shite I've ever driven.(especially compared with Jags and Mercs I've had.)

We're on our third.

I like my Astra :)

Back on topic, the heat-shield is irrelevant when moving due to the cooling effect of passing air. The problem arises when you stop moving...

I have a 56 reg Astra and its the best car I have ever had and I have had lots of cars. My second favourite had to be my Mk 1 ford escort. Back on track though that heat shield needs putting back on. Asap for safety reasons.

Correct, I was referring to the science. When the car is moving (or reasonable wind is blowing under it) the air turbulence carries heat away from the exhaust (and the underside of the car). However, what if you're stationary in traffic with the engine running and no airflow?

The heat rises, things get hot that shouldn't...

Absolutely spot on mate and its for that reason why you need the heat shield on. It really is common sense mate it needs putting back on and for the length of time it takes to fit it with the washers its really worth the effort in the end.

Just got round to taking a look at this this morning..... made a mistake on my original post... :Dunce:

This piece of aluminuim goes between the exhaust and the spare tyre well outer body work! Petrol tank is on the opposite side by the looks of things.

Had to do a few errands this morning, so the car was on the go for an hour and a half. After I'd finished I touched the spare tyre outer bodywork and was cool. I could also touch the exhaust without it being burning hot.

Now I'm wondering if it's more of a guard in case the exhaust loosens from it's fixings and doesn't damage the underside of the tyre well bodywork, or the bodywork doesn't damage the exhaust.

Thanks for all the replies, it's very much appreciated. Sorry for the misleading 1st post!

Regards,

snapman
