Sensible Topic Sun page 3

Think the only women that are degraded or demeaned are the ones who are showin their tiddies.I think it's so old hat now tho. Years ago it was the only place to see a pair other than those of your missus, your mistress...or your sisters' when u were growin up!! Now that u can have access to anything u want on t'interweb, I wonder why they still publish the pics. It used to help to sell the newspapers..can it really have the same effect now. There are tits n fannies on lots of tv programmes now that at times has left me feeling a little uncomfortable if minors are in the room and I'm no prude, but i doubt that many people young ,old, male or female would take much notice of a chick with her la's out in a paper, let alone be offended. Anyway

TITS ARE ACE!!!

I really don't see the problem with it at all!! It's up to the person who's doing it they don't have to take there top off and pose for a camera!! And all this it's offensive to women is all rubbish in my opinion, everybody knows what there going to find on page 3 of the sun or the star so if your that offeneded don't look at it or buy it simple!!!!!

Its no more offensive than a spanish/south of france beach & millions of british families visit them each year & dont take offence.

These Girls are not stupid they will all be getting a very good wage for it.Lets be honest here with a body like they have why not flaunt it in a worldwide paper. Its great keep it up girls. ;)

You are, of course, entitled to that opinion, but I'm guessing you're not a woman.

Looks as though page3 might be on the way out soon anyway.

Murdoch “considering” getting rid of “so last century” Page 3

Which is what triggered my thoughts. Demeaning to which women? The ones who DON'T want to get their kit off? That's a bit like a feminist laying down the rules for other women surely? Given that we're likely all men in this thread we probably have no idea what women consider demeaning, after all, we only have one opinion to go on! Hysterical radicals excepted...

I don't know why some people talk of "offended". I'm not offended just don't think it does anything but perpetuate a particular and very limited view of women.

I think there's room for a variety of views and I don't hear any page three girls complaining?

Just to challenge a bit more, does anyone think it paradoxical that the countries where women cover up the most are the most repressive to women? On the other hand those countries where women are not so constrained have better opportunities for women I.e. Sweden.

Personally, I would not be happy for Mrs M to do the page three thing, but, I know this much, if she makes her mind up it would be a REALLY good idea if I zipped it ;)

The centre part of that post is very relevent and a very good point well made

I'm not talking about repression: I see it more as manipulation, not just of the women but also our minds.

Commodification - every thing's a product.

First rule of Capitalism - make money. Turn something into a commodity so that volumes can be readily managed, then persuade lots of people they need it (manipulation). A much wider issue...

I'm conflicted.

I see and agree with all points made, both for and against. (as in they are all totally valid)

But I'd personally like to see it go.

I think the comment in the link puts it well.

"its so last century".

I've never really been bothered by it. They're not exploited into doing it although there can be a seedy side to the glamour industry leading into porn, but I'd like to think at this level it doesn't go on.

Growing up in the 80's it was a chance to see a rarely unobtainable fruit but these days it does seem very tacky and dated. Do guys really buy those papers because they have a pair of tame pips on page 3? You can barely get through the day or evening watching TV without stumbling into something more revealing and sexualised if that's your forte.

I can also respect a woman's opinion on it being degrading. Picturing a stereotype here but if a group of ignorant builders sitting in a cafe oggling page 3 feel justified to then go back to work and publically "phwoor" a woman walking past like a piece of meat that's just been on display for that purpose like in that paper, therefore making them feel uncomfortable, then maybe they have a point.

Perhaps a compromise would be to just have 1 tatty out for 12 months and then retire it to room 101 where it can disappear like the dinosaur it has become :)
