I've posted elsewhere but, since then I've been a bit surprised at all the fuss in the media generally.

Is page three really that bad? Why?

Hoping for a sensible debate here.

If a good looking girl wants to flash her thrupennies then i am happy to look.

It presents women in a particular way which is reductive and somewhat demeaning.

Haven't looked at a "Sun" for years, but personally I never found it offensive. I know women who did though.

On the other hand...what's the point? It's sooooooooooo 1970's. The world has moved on.

The "Daily Record" in Scotland stopped doing Page 3 donkey's years ago (the only t*ts there now are the sports journalists) because there was a consensus that they were outdated and sexist.

Personally if a lass wants to do it let her. It's probably a better medium than going down the top shelf route as they may get forced into exposing all?!?

In saying that though, I have never bought the Sun or any other sensational type newspaper for about 18 years.

I do have a tendency to agree with what Nara has said it is 1970's and the world has moved on.

It is also an avenue for these young girls to a modelling career and thay are not under duress to pose are they. Also the sun page 3 photgrapher afaik is a lady

From what I understand, women queue up to get on page three and many move to greater and better things as a result. They may not have become successful otherwise?

The Sun is not the only newspaper - I believe other 'red-tops' print topless pictures? The Sun seems to be the number one though - is it a Murdoch issue perhaps?

On Nara's comment, the world has moved on but if it sells newspapers it seems unlikely The Sun will be listening too hard?

It's only the Sun and the Sport that I am aware of that have a page 3.
Not a Murdoch issue on my part, but from a media point of view it could be especially with the recent furore.

Listening, humouring most likely.

the daily Star also still have page 3

Going back to Hamba's point about reductive and demeaning, I've even heard claims about incitement to rape as a result of these sort of pictures? Surely, this is an issue that has nothing to do with newspapers publishing topless pictures?

Now that's a whole new debate, it falls under the same as a girl wearing a short skirt on a night out is asking it.

Sort of although the Stop Page 3 campaign seem to factor this in? Quickly on your comment, while in no way condoning...

...as a guy who is more than capable, I avoid situations where the odds are poor. That's just common-sense. I should be able to walk anywhere at any time of day dressed as I prefer. Truth is, for both men and women, this could be unwise...

I think we are far too sex obsessed and that many of our problems stem from this.

I like sex but I limit my sexual behaviour to be just between my wife and myself.

I'm not interested in porn and I don't want to objectify my sexual/love experience.

I could be drawn to lots of women but I decided long ago that I wouldn't go down the road of being at the mercy of my sexual passions - they can work for me in the relationship I have chosen - and so I stick with the promises I made on my wedding day.

Who runs this anti page 3 malarky? Most likely a fat old feminist who's own breasts have long since become long saggy sandbags.

There's nothing wrong with it and I enjoy having a look in the canteen at work every day so I'll be annoyed if they do go as once again those who take offence get their own way as apparently being annoyed with something earns you extra privileges in this country but put into perspective there's a lot worse to worry about!

The reverse is also true though Hamba, we have become a society tied evermore increasingly to others telling us what is socially acceptable and that boundary narrows continuously, making even the slightest variation from the considered norm sneered at (no sex before marriage etc). Do you then extend that into other more simplistic areas, gay marriage as an example.

I could refer back to the suppression of a million years of evolution and how that could affect us, something that as a species is inherently genetically coded, but then the argument would be surely the evolution element is to have the ability of self control and inhibit natural urges. That is of course not saying there needs to be some boundaries as some activities extend into the not just morally, but legally un-acceptable.

I am, for the most part open minded, but It's a difficult subject, which is why I'm (trying) to choose my words carefully.

It is a difficult subject but, it seems to me, that we are pushed on all sides to surrender to our passions in order to make money for some and power for others.

I don't suppress my desires: I just choose to look at them and ask myself do I want to go in that direction.

Of course I'm no saint and I can be as selfish and whatever as the next person but I have the intention to act mindfully and behave as we'll as I can.

I must be old - I have no desire to be other than where I am...

You always did like your DIY.....

People have different perceptions, what seems strange to one person, is perfectly acceptable to another. Doesn't mean either view is wrong (not that you said it was, I was just citing a point)

Alive, and able to state my opinion but not force that opinion or stance on others.
As for the Sun and page 3, it serves it's purpose and has a place in the market place, it is not everyones choice but those that don't like it or disagree with its content do not have to buy it.
Unlike the BBC...........Hey Ho.
