stb to laptop

hi all
just got a new laptop sony fz18l how do i connect stb to it to use as media centre ......wot hardware do i require to do tjhis....havent got a clue was told it coulld be done lol guy who said it could bedone doesnt know lol ...

i currently have the laptop connected to lcd tv can play media ie music dvd avi divx etc through it to tv via hdmi cable (very good ) but i am looking to record to it now

Dos your laptop have a built in TV card? If so does have any form of AV inputs? You would ned to connect your STB to this and then setup media centre to pick up the picture. Im sure you also need some form of MPEG decoder (Nvidia for example) before it it will give you the option of setting up a STB.
