Hi

I have added a SSD drive to my computer and loaded Win 7 onto it, the SATA drive the was in the computer was formatted and Vista loaded onto it. Each program was loaded onto a drive with the other drive disconnected then both connected. Win 7 boots no problem and both drives are visible in windows explorer and in the boot section of the bios as hard drives but the boot priority section only shows one of them that being the drive I set as the top drive in the hard drive section. Why do they both not show in boot priority?

Thanks

your bios might be one that only let hard drive 0 be the boot drive ,try swapping them round on the leads

if that not it could you tell us what bios it is ,if shop pc what the model number, etc

Hi mate its a common problem..but a simple fix..
You have to boot into bios and go to boot options and disable secure boot (change to secure boot OFF)..

Hi AJT
I have looked in the bios it's an American Megatrends and P C Specialist built it to my spec, in the boot section under Security are -
Supervisor Password : Not installed
User Password : Not installed
Change Supervisor Password
Change User Password
There are no other Security sections

Thanks anyway for the info perhaps that is in a different make of bios.

I'm guessing this a UEFI vs legacy bios issue which I think is what AJT was trying to say.

UEFI has secure boot which can cause issues with dual boot, try switching to legacy mode.

Hi phawk754
The bios is American Megatrends and in the boot section there are the following sections
- boot priority (the only hard drive showing here is the top of the list in hard drives section )
- hard drives . (this section shows both drives and whichever I list first is the one showing in boot priority )

Thanks - I was wondering if I should check the jumping setting on the original hard drive and if it is not already set to master I will give that a try.

What the motherboard model are you using. It should be printed on the motherboard itself or you can check it in BIOS settings.

and SATA drives don't have jumpers for master / slave. Some early SATA II drives did have a jumper to make they appear like SATA I for compatibility but your motherboard wouldn't even pick up the drive if that was causing an issue.

Hi another thing that may need doing is to rename/aasign a drive letter..
As it won't be seen as a logical or physical drive..rename new drive to something like D or E..
Main drive is best at C.
Also have you been to computer manufacture site to see if there is a BIOS update of any sort..
May not be solution but just posting what I'm thinking..

Thanks to everyone I think if I want to dual boot I will have to install both programs on the SSD and use the other to add the programs that run with Win 7 and Vista.

correct, you will need to install the apps twice, once for each O/S.

Did you manage to sort out your boot problem.?

Hi - I will partition the drive and install each program and drivers on each part.
Not sorted the boot problem I cannot get the SSD and SATA drive into the boot priority section at the same time.
If the worst comes to the worst I have an old laptop with Vista installed on it.
