Snooping ISP's

Has anyone heard of instances of ISP's monitoring users browsing habits and perhaps filtering for illegal activities (Hacking, Cracking, Preaking) and then passing that info on to the relevant autourities ?? Or am I just Paranoid ?? <img src="eek.gif" border="0">

Freeserve I belive monitor certain ports......IE 6667 for sub7 etc and if u are unlucky to go after an IP there monitoring they claim to report you to your ISP

i have heard of isp's monitoring .but this issue has been going on for many years ,and its probably just a roumour as ive never heard of any one being caught in this way

Your isp logs everything you have down from downloading to looking at sites that is how they snoop but i don't know how long they keep evrything on record for, as the amount on info is massive they can't store everyone & everything <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Hmm...all ISP's have the capacity to log what you do and where you go on-line...but as Johnny5 says the ammount of data would be phonem! Although e-mail is traceable after the event and so is an IP addy.<br />I think you'd have to attract the attention of some of the more specialised security services (special branch and above) before they started looking at your on-line attivities. I would think currentlty sending 'open' e-mails with stuff in about terrorist activities will flag you up at Menwith Hill (the ECHELON home) and then it would go from there, discrete snooping by special branch etc.....<br />Many moons ago, my brov' was into anarchy and dis-order and for about three years all his mail was mysteriously opened by someone in the 'post-office'. Which after a lot of fuss he discovered was the Special Branch.......

i have about 20 attempts from people at energis-squared trying to hack my pc to see what i have on it... they try to send packets through my machine they try to hack by http they even tried to pretend that they was a machine on my network they try focking everything <img src="mad.gif" border="0"> lol i have done my own research and decided that if they want to hack me im gonna hack them (well its only fare lmao) but they seem like ME very secure <img src="frown.gif" border="0">

so i decided to find out more about these people so done a whois search on there IP and came up that they are a internet security team they also work for freeserve (and would you guess i am joined to freeserve) and my old site was removed because i had 7000 hits a day and my keywords where things like "hacking, i*v d*git*l etc you get the drift.... and also y i was doing my research i found that they also do work for the BBC and our friends i*v lol

so im left thinking if freeserve wanted to check what im up 2 then all they would have to do is watch from there server that im connected 2.... so now i think that freeserve are not very interested but its more of a third party interest because no matter what we do we are still have rights and for people to act against us without permission is a crime itself

so be careful and make sure you have a good firewall..... you never now whos watching !!!!!!!!!!!

well i have been doing more research and they work (snoop for freeserve) i even phoned them up and told them that i want to report abuse LMFAO (for those who dont know LMFAO = laugh my focking arse off) they said what was the problem i said i keep getting peoples ip's trying to get inside my PC they said what is the IP addy LMFAO i told them 217.135.80.128

then she gave me some fanny about that they dont hack into PC's they only look to see what people are up 2... she also told me that it is illegal to hack into PC's

but i will make it clear to all the members and anyone i meet they are sneaky but not sneaky enough for me....

i have a lot of friends that hack for a living (dont worry these guys are not the type that hack innocent people, actually they are against that) they go for big people and business.

and they told me that dont think your safe if you got a firewall because your not if people want your info they can get it, its that simple.

but 1 guy told me that Zone Alarm is ok but its not as secure as they make out, and he recommended Conceal Firewall

For the last few weeks, every 15 mins when I'm online my firewall tells me it has blocked access to my computer from allsorts of different ports for allsorts of different reasons from IP address blah, blah, blah. 90% of these IP addresses lead back to BTinternet, my ISP, are they trying to find out what I'm up to, should I ring them and complain or what?

Ok i have read all the posts on this and my concern has just grown 10 fold. Whats the best Firewall to use?

I have nortons but is that good enought or should i use something else.

Dont panic folks most of the hits you get from your isp are usually just trying to see if you are still active - kind of a redundancy check to see if they can cut your connection and recycle it for the next user. Most of the time they couldnt give a shit what you are doing - unless of course you either try to hack them or visit "subversive" sites <img src="graemlins/EVIL.gif" border="0" alt="[EVIIL]" /> <br />Best thing to test with is a site called shields up - the url for which escapes me. And that will do a port probe on your machine and test your firewall. That should put your mind at ease
