The BBC and Sky Sports will broadcast Formula 1 in the UK between 2012 and 2018 under a new rights deal.

The BBC has been the exclusive broadcaster of F1 in the UK since 2009 but its contract with Formula One Management was due to expire after the 2013 season.

Sky Sports will show every race, qualifying session and practice live.

BBC Sport will broadcast half the races live, as well as the qualifying and practice sessions from those races.

Both companies will broadcast in high definition.

Races screened by the BBC will be live on the BBC Sport website for UK users.

The BBC will have highlights on TV, online and mobile for any race it is not showing live, and all races will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 live.

Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said: "We are absolutely delighted that F1 will remain on the BBC.

"The sport has never been more popular with TV audiences at a 10-year high and the BBC has always stated its commitment to the big national sporting moments.

"With this new deal not only have we delivered significant savings but we have also ensured that through our live and extended highlights coverage all the action continues to be available to licence-fee payers."

Races shown live on BBC TV will include the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Monaco GP and the concluding race of the season.

Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: "This is fantastic news for F1 fans and Sky Sports will be the only place to follow every race live and in HD.

"We will give F1 the full Sky Sports treatment with a commitment to each race never seen before on UK television."

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone told BBC Sport: "It's super for F1. It will mean a lot more coverage for the sport.

"There'll be highlights as well as live coverage on two different networks now, so we get the best of both worlds."

bernie is a greedy little troll. i cant bleive this. this will affect the teams in a big way . why would any sponser want to pay as much to advertise to less of an audiance. me thinks bernies pockets will be lined though. i already have sky sports but dont relish the thought of adverts every 10min during the race.

GUTTED.

And people complained about ITV's coverage - good news for business, bad for the fans. Can't blame the BBC, they couldn't be expected to match Sky's money....

i agree with the above statements... too much happens in these races now to have any adverts, we are going to miss alot of action now..

what a shame.....

im gunna look in to a sat set up to get it in foriegn. and just listen to 5 live. does anyone know of a channel that doesnt have adverts?

ths is bad news for F1 fans imho.

I like the BBC's current format and after the shambles of the itv broadcasts you think he would know better.

He really is a little dictator that wee horrible cnut. You can see everyone treading lightly around him.

i hope he gets caught in a NotW type sting with a nazi uniform, 3 hookers and orange in his mouth and a celtic top. (the celtic top is just to embarrass him lol :p )

My guess is that he doesn't care. As evidenced by were all the news races are happening that Asia is the big market for F1. With all the advertisement bans in europe for this, that and the other, Europe is becoming less attractive for F1 anyway.

At the end of the day he is try to run a business and if sky are willing to pay top wack then I can't see and other choice but to pick them. BBC will still protect UK GP and you get several others as well and thankfully that will be on BBC for a while to come.

In fact as a license payer I am glad they didn't get into a stupid bidding war with sky. Even though F1 has been the most exciting it has been for years, MotoGP is way better for actual racing.

Sky have just said they wont place any adverts during the actual race. Whether they actually stick to that policy or not is another matter entirely !

If they put it on subscription only sky sports (most likely) then the chances are there won't be ads.

Im well pi$$ed off at this news, the bbc where doing a great job this year with the F1,record viewing stats etc,i already have sky sports so not just moaning because im gonna miss some races on the bbc,but there are plenty of ppl who dont have sky/sky sports and are going to miss the live action on half the races. I realise the bbc have to cut costs, but why not drop some of this soap shit ? One ep of Eastenders a week is plenty is is not ? for those who need the extra depression dumped on them !!

yes and there other things the bbc can do to save money, like cutting down on how many radio stations they have, or dropping 1 or 2 of there tv digital channels, oh and not paying such high wages to them selves.......

not be long before it's The Open, The Masters, Wimbledon, The Classics Derby etc, so much for the protected sports, btw there is a clause in F1 somewhere or other that states it has to be on free telly.

This sort of action is precisely why Murdoch wanted to take full control of BSkyB. Had he actually taken control I'm sure he would have demanded sole rights.
He practically begged the government to cut down the BBC, he got his way with his mate Cameron, who told BBC to make 20% cuts.
I can't imagine anyone paying the SkySports subscription just to watch 20 hours of F1 a year.
Viewing figures of F1 have grown substantially in the last few years to the benefit of the teams and sponsers
I believe viewing figures will drop dramatically, to the detriment of all involved in the sport.
All I can say is " Serve 'em right, the greedy pricks"
