Serves me right for getting involved.
I used to think like you (all the anti-American self hating 'not in my name' crowd on here), I really did.
As you mature you begin to see the nuance in life; that it is not as clear as you once had hoped. We may not be perfect, but the west is the greatest power for good in the world (when you accept humanistic principles of 'fraternite, egalite, liberte').
Please, if anybody here believes America (which has a troubled past) and the UK (which again has it's previous problems) are worse than Iraq (thousands of innocents slaughtered on whim, use of chemical weapons on own people, Husseins sons allowed to walk the streets and rape women at will), Iran (Ahmadenajad believes it is his destiny to eliminate the Jewish population), or Afghanistan (Taleban wishing to install Sharia law, countless atrocities) please tell me why.
One point, can we only talk about present problems with a country/regime/government please. The reason being anyone can do the moral equivalency thing and say 'well the Americans killed native American Indians!' thus rendering all countries equally bad with one broad uninformed brush stroke.
Let us keep to the present, and compare present governments.
The problem as I see it is decadence. The west affords so much freedom that its populace takes it for granted and do what lazy people do best, complain. So people can laugh at Bush for his inarticulate nature, and comment upon how our soldiers have been duped by 'blood for oil' tyrants, and go about their day all nice and free. Great, innit?
Iraq reminds me of 'Road wars' on sky1. Police stop an illegal driver for the umpteenth time. He is a cheeky chappy, lies a bit, then apologizes and tries to shake the coppers hand. He has had a few producers, been to court once but got off on a technicality.
Then, when he finds out his car his getting crushed, he gets stroppy, and trys to light a spliff in the policemans face. The next thing he has a knee in his chest, handcuffs on and a grazed face. One too many times.
Cheeky Saddam fucked about one too many times, and needed to be shown who's boss.
Ok. So I'm guessing Britain created Iraq for oil 100 years ago. CIA created problem in Afghanistan. We should not have Air bases in Saudi Arabia. We only make war to create a culture of fear to keep the status quo.
Am I close?
