Ps3 query and help needed

Hey guys.
Ive been given a pS3 , ive brought it back from a YLOD.
It works fine apart from It wont play any disk at all , I'm not sure if its the original blue ray drive.

If i try to connect to playstation store , the logo flashes up and then just goes to a blank screen and stays there.
so questions are :

Are the two problems related ?
How do i find out if it is the original drive ?
If its not the original drive , would that be the problem because it has to be married to the console or something ?
Can I use the console without a blue ray drive installed, download games from the store and play from the hard drive ?

Sorry if these are simple questions but i've never had a PS3 before so i'm a complete nooobie

had the ps3 ever been opened before u got it?

there is a good chance that the lense may need replaced on it.

as for the store loading problem, im not sure about that. are u sure its got an internet connection?

Yes it had been opened before.

How will I know if its the lens or the wrong blue ray player ?

Definitely got an internet connection.

try going into safe mode and trying some of those options

Ive restored it back to factory settings , took 36 hours. Which apparently is normal

can u not find out from the person u got it from whether its the original drive?

have u updated the ps3 to the newest firmware that came out (again) today

I've asked today and he said that he had two ps3s and tried too make one good one , he can't remember which drive he left in the one he gave me. He's thrown the other one away. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

No it still shows a blank screen after the logo.

To add another question. I'm not really fussed about the blue ray , I'd just like to download games from the playstore on to the hard drive.
Does there have to be a blue ray drive connected in order to do this.

No, you don't need a drive connected to download to the hard disk.
