A power surge at Telewest's super headend at Knowsley caused disruption to digital TV services on Wednesday.

The power surge at 06:30 occurred during a "routine repair," the company said in a statement. The surge was sufficient to cause damage to transmission equipment in the super headend, resulting in a massive national service outage.

By 9am, Telewest was transmitting a limited service consisting of around forty main channels from its backup centre at Hayes. Another problem then cropped up, with subscribers using Pace 4000 boxes not being able to receive any services at all. This was resolved by 11:45am, but still only partial TV services are being received on a national basis.

Meanwhile, recovery work is progressing at the Knowsley site.

On New Year's Eve, the Knowsley site was flooded, resulting in an outage on a similar scale that lasted through to January 2.
