This is a difficult list to compile as things change all the time and different equipment can offer different chans. Also everyones 'popular' is different, so its just a basic guide, not extensive in any way. Thanks to Skinback for a previous list to make start from.
So feel free to add your comments and additional channels to this list, including free chans that are any good.
Remember- watching pay-tv without paying is illegal. Do not expect pay-tv channels to always clear, it is not your right to view just because they did clear before- get an official subscription if you want stability!

Not so much for pirate tv, but there are lots of English channels to watch that are free so worth keeping in this list. There are hundreds so i'll mention the popular, and dont forget well over 50 of the best digital radio stations all free on satellite.
BBC1 - various regions including Scotland that shows football not shown on English regions.
BBC2, BBC3 & BBC4 - great to have in digital.
BBCi 1~7 - live event/feed channels
CBBC & CBeebies, Pop, Tiny Pop - Kids channels.
ITV3 - most succesful new digital channel.
ITV News, Sky News, CNN, EuroNews
Reality TV, Open Access2, Sound TV, Travel Channel

now i will just mention cheap official cards that are very popular-
ART Sports- is found on Hotbird, not hacked but should be less than 100 quid for 6 months. 4 Sports chans show English Premiership, Scottish Premiership, Champions League and lots of sports generally with english commentary.
DigitAlb- is found between Hotbird & Astra1. Not hacked but should cost 70 quid for 6 months. English Premiership football, 5 movie channels with good mix of modern and older films.
