Online marketplace eBay announced Friday that its separation from payment processing company PayPal will take place on July 17 2015, after eBay’s board of directors gave its final stamp of approval.

Copy of email i got from Ebay this morning......

Dear ***********,

eBay is happy to announce plans to further improve the customer experience by intermediating payments on our Marketplace platform. In doing so, eBay will manage the payments flow, simplifying the end-to-end experience for both buyers and sellers. We have signed an agreement with Adyen, a leading global payments processor, to become our primary payments processing partner. PayPal, a long-time eBay partner, will be a payments option at checkout for eBay buyers.

You do not need to take any action at this time. The transition to full payments intermediation will be a multi-year journey.

Over the past three years, eBay has transformed its business to drive the best choice, most relevance and most powerful selling platform. Building out our payments capabilities is the next step in that strategy.

Payments intermediation will bring significant benefits for eBay sellers. You can expect a simplified pricing structure, more predictable access to funds, and most sellers can expect their costs of payments processing to be reduced. We’re also working on ways to provide sellers a central place to track and manage their business, which can soon include payments information.

By offering buyers more choice in how they pay and expanding payment options into more geographies, eBay believes sellers will be able to reach more buyers and improve conversion.

The transition to full payments intermediation will be a multi-year journey. eBay will begin intermediation on a small scale in North America starting in the second half of 2018, expanding in 2019 under the terms of the Operating Agreement with PayPal. In 2021, we expect to have transitioned a majority of Marketplace customers to the new payments experience.

Again, you do not need to take any action at this time. As eBay gets closer to the initial phase of its intermediation efforts, we will share more details about this process and next steps for sellers. In the meantime, please read the eBay Inc announcement for further information. For any immediate questions or to share feedback, please email [email protected].

We’re looking forward to what’s next, and to getting there with you.

As always, thank you for selling on eBay.

Kris Beyens,
VP & COO eBay EMEA

So will this new company offer the same protection as PayPal then ?

My understanding is that Ebay and PayPal “both” offered the same protection.
Only Ebay is 28 days and PayPal is 180 days.

Seems all will be ok on Ebay but me personally i think PayPal is great protection for buying online.
It only affects sellers anyway as they pay the fees.
So sellers on Ebay will be glad of this.

Lol, i always was a bit behind with the times.

This change will only come into effect here in the UK around 2021. But to be honest I don't think much will change as the new company will also want some of your money to take payments.

When I first started selling on ebay they used to have several payment methods, paypal was only one of them, along with quite a few others you could put on your listings, so you could choose who you wanted to process the payments and also give the customers the choice.

I hate Paypal, but 80% of my customers use it, with 10% paying by Amazon Pay but very few opting to pay by card.

So not offering Paypal is not an option.

I love PayPal and FleaBay
lets hope the other one is just as good but i doubt it
only time will tell.

I don't think it is unfair for Paypal to take a slice of the cash they handle since they do after all provide protection. What does my head in is their "security". Twice I have been locked out of my account for no plausible reason (funnily enough on both occasions I had funds in the account) and their online and telephone helplines are worse that useless. For instance: You get locked out of your account> Try for online help> You must log in for this. WTF?
IT's all well & good when it works; it's when something goes wrong it becomes a nightmare.

@river4ever ultimately buyers often do pay, as professional sellers often jack up their prices to cover the fees. Sadly not an option for "Joe public" sellers.

What is stopping joe public sellers from up their price's to cover fees....

They charge for that too /:( Heads they win, tails you lose!!

Thats strange my final fees are the same whether it's an auction or buy it now. Ebay take 10% of the final price the item sells.

For a business seller the final valuation fees are between 6% - 11% depending on which category your item is in. Also the listing fees are different for business sellers. for a basic shop you get 250 free buy-it-now listings plus 50 auction listings per month then it's 10p per listing for buy-it-now and 15p for an auction. For a personal account you get 50 free listings then it's 35p.

You also can get charged a final valuation fee if your listing does not sell or you end the auction early, depending on the reason and how long the listing has left to run.

Also ebay now INCLUDE the postage in the final valuation fee, they didn't used to, but that means the idiots that list items for 99p with £20 postage can't get away with it.

Ebay are ok UNTIL you have an issue. Then they are completely useless.....
