I've seen small patches like that before but never anything on that scale, had to do a little search about it and found out it is caused by the Ermine Moth, have a look at this bit on a Spring Watch page.

Looks like invasion of the body (tree) snatchers to me - creepy. Wouldn't want to fall asleep in that forest. :FRIGHT:
