anyone know what the best codec is for playing .mkv files are :)

Cheers

i recently got a .mkv file and tried to play it on vlc and it would just stutter and freeze so dl finalcodecs2008 and now it is playing perfectly in 1080p

mkv is a Matroska file so the Matroska codec pack will do it but I just use K-lite mega pack and they play with wmp.

so klite will work :)

thing is as you may know Ive just got a new PC and I am trying not to put loads of unnecessary sh*t on it (wont last long lol)
so want to try and get it right first time :)

seems K-lite will work :)

K-lite is fine m8, anything it puts on will help you if you intend to convert to dvd.

Don't ever install codec packs you are asking for trouble.

mvk is just a container so all you need is a splitter that will access it on the fly when necessary.

The best one is Haali ....

Haali Media Splitter

..... but before you do anything, install your codec packs, your additional players etc etc and then install Haali and ffdShow. You have everything pretty well covered then.

:)

Ive installed K lite now and it works with .mkv file

Ive always used K lite in the past and its been ok

The problem is that you could be installing problems for the future. You will not need 90% of what you have installed so why risk incompatabilities ?

It makes much more sense to install a single codec as and when required.
