Motherwell have named former Brighton, Reading and Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mark McGhee as their new boss.
The 50-year-old succeeds Maurice Malpas and will have Scott Leitch as assistant at the Scottish Premier League club.

McGhee said: "Motherwell has shown it is a team that is quite capable of punching above its weight.

"And anyone who knows me will know that no effort will be spared in making sure that we perform at our best on a regular basis."

Motherwell's new manager has been out of work since leaving Brighton in September.

The former Aberdeen, Celtic, Hamburg and Newcastle striker started his managerial career with Reading followed by a brief, one-year stint at Leicester.

McGhee then took over at Wolves in 1995 and spent three years there before joining Millwall and latterly Brighton.

Mark's excellent combination of skill, experience and motivation made him an outstanding candidate for the job
Motherwell owner John Boyle

"I'm delighted to return to Scotland as manager of Motherwell," he said.

"I am determined that, from next season, the team will give its absolute best to deliver the kind of results the supporters rightly expect."

Majority shareholder John Boyle added: "We undertook an exhaustive search for a new manager and believe that Mark's excellent combination of skill, experience and motivation made him an outstanding candidate for the job.

"We think this appointment gives us a great foundation for the future and our supporters can look to next season with renewed confidence and optimism."

Malpas had stepped up from assistant when Terry Butcher left for Australian side Sydney FC.

But he left Motherwell this month after a disappointing first season in charge.

Malpas had faced calls to quit from some fans after a run of one win in 13 games at the end of the season.

And it wasn't until the penultimate weekend of the season that Well avoided relegation.

But he only stepped down after apparently refusing to accept the club's decision to replace his assistant, Paul Hegarty, with former Well skipper Leitch.

Leitch left County after the Dingwall club were relegated to Division Two and Boyle insisted that the 37-year-old was not in the running for the manager's job.

Former Motherwell midfielder Gary McAllister, St Johnstone boss Owen Coyle and ex-Well manager Tommy McLean had all been linked with the vacancy.

Joe Miller, the former Clyde player-manager, and former Motherwell defender Luc Nijholt also expressed their interest in the job.
