A 20-year-old man has been killed during a street brawl involving up to 40 people at a popular seaside resort.
Devon and Cornwall Police have launched a murder inquiry after the incident in Torquay in which Benjamin Crews, from the area, was discovered seriously injured.
Officers were called to a disturbance in Avenue Road just before midnight where the injured man was discovered.
Attempts were made by paramedics and doctors to revive him but he was pronounced dead at the town's Torbay District Hospital.
"Shortly before midnight yesterday, police were called to a disturbance in a street involving around 40 young people who were fighting," a police spokesman said.
"The 40 were made up of youths and young adults.
"During this fight a local man received serious injuries and, despite efforts made by paramedics at the scene and later in hospital, he died in Torbay District Hospital.
"A major incident inquiry has been instigated and police are appealing for any witnesses who may have been in the Avenue Road area of Torquay shortly before midnight to come forward."
