Telewest Broadband has said this evening that only a small number of customers were affected by a power supply unit problem used with some Telewest-supplied cable modems.
Earlier reports elsewhere on the Internet claimed that the company would be withdrawing all Scientific Atlanta 'WebStar' modems from service. Telewest tonight told us this is definitely not the case.
Telewest Broadband's managing director, Gavin Patterson, said:
"We are currently experiencing a short-term problem with a limited number of power supply units (PSUs), which we use with some of our cable modems [but not the modem itself].

"We have identified the unreliable PSUs and have resolved the problem with those customers affected.

"We have taken quick and responsible action to address the issue by swapping out the unreliable PSUs and installing customers with replacement products.

"We are working with our suppliers and are maintaining normal installation and supply levels. We apologise to the small number of customers that have been affected."
