This is a long shot but the last time I had to setup a wireless connection on vista it had already detected the wireless network and then the owner change the encryption in the router and vista would not auto detect the new encryption so i had to update them manually by right clicking on the network connection and change in the info

after you reset your netgear router did you then disable the ethernet/wifi card and then reenable it to get a new ip address?

This may be a silly question, but does the laptop have a hardware switch somewhere on the outside edge to turn wireless on and off?

You may have knocked it without realising.
