ITV has bought cable operator ntl's 35% stake in the ITV News Channel, giving it outright ownership and control of the station.
The channel launched at 13:30 on August 1, 2000 as a joint-venture between ITN and ntl. In June 2002, Carlton and Granada bought out ITN's 65% stake, and set about rebranding the station with the ITV name. ITN has a contract to supply news for the channel running through to 2009.
"Gaining total control of the ITV News Channel is a further demonstration of ITV’s commitment to news," said Clive Jones, chief executive of the ITV News Group. "ITV News Channel has already established itself as a real alternative to the other 24-hour news services, offering the same high production values associated with ITV News."
