As the title says.. I am the Daddy of nobheads.

I've driven a diesel car for 20 years....Today for some unknown reason, I put unleaded in it and hit the motorway. 15 mile trip. All was good until 7 mles in when the odd misfire, etc. Got to the destination, then turned off. Obviously won't start.. Coque...

I know all of the possibilities sadly as its a CRD rather than a good old "clunker".

My mates a mechanic, and he's going to have a look at it, so I know I can trust the diagnosis..

What I could really do with knowing is do Direct Line cover this kind of nobhead activity, or not. Done a Google for it, and there are as many "it's a grey area", "yes they do", "no they don't", etc..

Has anyone ever claimed from Direct Line for a similar fook up?

Only plus side is that my m8 has lent me his ST200 until mines sorted..

has he put a big sign on the petrol flap saying PETROL??? if i was him i would lol

all you can do mate is ring the insurers and ask them ya self, give em no details just ask them first, if they say no hang up and try again with a different person, try it about 3 times and if they still say no then you will have to fix ya self

Cant help with possible claim against your insurance as i have no experience of that situation.
You dont say how much petrol you put in and how much heavy oil was left in your tank.
Drain the tank, bleed the system, refuel and prime.
should sort it!
I used to drive an old 1.8D escort van (non turbo) and my mate put 15lts of unleaded in it by mistake.
I just toped it up and drove it with the odd missfire etc.
to be honest it neded a decoke anyway.
you wont be the first or last to do this, so your safe thats a whole load fellow nob heads that have done exactly the same thing!

Filled it to the gills with unleaded...cos it was bone dry.. Think the range showed 15 miles left when I filled up..

Yeah, if it had been a clunker like my old 406, then there would be no worries.. then will run on virtually any fuel. TDCi's moan at having diesel put through them.. Just fearing the worst, cos I've had a mint couple of months.. Everything was all tickity boo.. I knew someat was going to happen..

At worst tech reckons injectors, pump, etc.. Not impossible to have knocked the ar$e out of the engine either.. Guess I'll have to try the phone and see approach..

150.000 people a year do a similar thing.. reckon theres a couple of ya keeping quiet..lol

I thought the nozzle sizes were all different now so this couldn't happen on newer cars?

I know used to have a stupid wagon driver at mine and he managed to fill the wagons add blu with unleaded! said it took him ages cause the nozzle wouldn't fit...

Yes the nozzles on Derv are larger, so you cant fill up petols with the black stuff, but not the other way round i'm afraid!

I reckon you might just get away with it. Drain the UL out and put a couple of litres of Diesel in. It'll hopefully just have had a nice clean with the petrol. Diesels are pretty solid even with all the new gubbins.

Sister put unleaded in her diesel Lexus went on motorway conked out.
needed a new engine.(£8,000) almost cried.

hope your not so unlucky. :(

I did this in my car (Volvo V70), put about 25l in the tank of UL, called the AA and they wanted to tow me to the nearest garage to drain at my expense, so filled the rest of the tank with diesel and added some reddex additive and drove off stopping every 25 or so miles to top up the tank, its been nearly two years now and not had a problem.

I also did this in my old company car too.... but they paid to have it drained!

Same with a guy in my work. brand new bmw 2 . He had to go threw his insurers and they paid for it. Cost thousands though. Again hope your not the same.

im sure its worse doin it diesel in petrol than petrol in diesel or its the other way round. but one way u are screwed where as the other way your not as bad.

Petrol is not a lubricant like diesel so a very good chance that the High Pressure pump is now knackered. It's likely it kept running as the rev's were good enough for the pump to pressure the system. When cranking if the pump cannot generate >140 Bar most common rail diesels will not start
