My laptop connects to my D-Link router with a D-Link wifi card. Or rather it doesn't ...

It looks OK. I get the wireless connection icon (with the connection described as "excellent") and if I open Network Connections it says the link is working fine.

But Internet Expolorer says "page cannot be opened .. blah ..blah". It is as though IE cannot "see" the internet connection. IN fact, no programs can connect to the Web, including Outlook and my anti-virus software.

This problem came out of the blue when I was using Win 98se.

So I removed the pc card and driver and instaslled a usb wifi dongle instead. But after a few days the same thing happened.

So I upgraded to Win XP. After a week of working perfectly, it's doing exactly the same thing.

Please, someone help before I go mad.

*Extra info: It's an IBM thinkpad T22, with 800mhz processor and 256 meg of ram, running XP Pro.
*I've tried checking the "detect network settings" box but that makes no odds.
*I've also tried the automatic repair connection wizard - but that seems to think there's nothing wrong.
*I've disabled both Zone Alarm and the Windows Security firewall and closed down AVG anti-virus.

Thanks to all who have read this far.

I take it your router is giving you an ip address i.e. DHCP?
Check you have a valid address by going in to start, run cmd
then type ipconfig /all. please post the results.

It looks like you are getting a connection to the wireless router but the router is not giving you the correct information for your laptop to use the resources

Capdan,

Suddenly, the machine is working - whether this will be temporary or permanent I cannot tell.

Here is the info you asked me to post. Sorry it took so long but I was at work before.

Thanks for taking a look. Maj

DNS.......................................:192.168.1.1

this is the information that matters
ip address is the unique address that comes from your wireless router
subnet is the phisical network you are on, dont worry about that for now
gateway it the route that all traffic needs to get out to the internet
dns should point to your gateway as your gateway will forward the dns requests to your service providers dns servers

All the info is correct there but as you say it is working now.
Next time it goes down do the same as before, i.e ipconfig / all
if it is different try going in to network addapters disable your wireless addapter then enable it, that should give it a kick up the arse.

Why this is doing this I can not tell but it may be worth changing the configuration yourself from DHCP to static, just to rule out things one at a time i.e. turn off dhcp on your router and config your lan addapter to the settings above.

Let me know how things go

 Blimey Capdan, that is pretty impressive advice. You're obviously an expert and I'm really grateful for your time.
Thanks
